2024/25 Kevin Thelwell

Dunno to me a bit like with Branthwaite last season, certain players just look to have it, think part of it is the composure they show and ability to shrug off a mistake.
He looks fine like I said and I don't think there will be any issue with him playing at CB long term, but knowing our luck mate he will turn out like Keane mk2 lol

Nah first time I can remember watching Keane, Lukaku made him look like he was a Sunday league player who'd been on the ale during the game.

Never ever seen a player buy a body feint and get rolled as badly as Keane did that day and his turning arc getting back would have made the titanic blush

I would be very surprised if you weren't saying Keane looked good at the point we signed him/after his first few games. It's too early to tell with O'Brien, he certainly doesn't look like a dud but 3 games getting a 7/10 at right back may have led to a slight overreaction in some quarters I think.

Maybe so about Keane but I also knew he was slow and had horrible agility as I'd seen him turned inside out by Rom mate and that wasn't an isolated thing with him. O'Brien has very very good pace for a CB - his agility not sure about yet, but the pace will allow recovery even if it's bad.

I'll also factor in Keane had only ever played in a Dyche low block, O'Brien came from Lyon where he played high up and did very well.

I'm not saying he's the next Baresi - but he shows all the attributes/signs you'd want in a 'modern' CB. The obvious compression is Lescott, and yeah I can see why Moyes is using him like he is as they have quite similar stuff about them.

Early days ofc, but he's been up against two very good side men already and adjusted well v both.

I remember the exact goal you're talking about. I think lukaku had done something on Sky the week before with Carragher showing what he was going to do. I tried to pretend it hadn't happened when we signed Keane.

Looking back at his summer window, especially now we can evaluate the team post-Dyche, I really think it’s under-appreciated.

He resolved PSR using Dobbin and Godfrey and gained a player in Tim who potentially is better than either.

He had multiple signings in well in advance of the season- including Ndiaye who increasingly looks one of the signings of the season across the whole league.

He had to also navigate the TFG collapse putting us back to square one cash flow wise. The briefing from the club was that nothing changed but it’s clear from that point on all transfer spending pretty much ceased other than wheeling and dealing a couple of free loans.

Crucially dealt with both PSR and the financial peril without having to sell Branthwaite, which is bigger than any incoming.

But people will have it down as some sort of disaster because of his last minute punt on Broja, which admittedly didn’t work out, but hardly negates a lot of great work in difficult and ever changing circumstances.

Good post.
I've been down on Thelwell, maybe unfairly.
I think it was Maupay.
Hope you're right and I'm wrong.

It's definitely a fair point about not going overboard. Like the squad did similar to this under Benitez and Ancelotti and it didn't always stay up.

But it's been 3 toighish games for OBrien, and he has conceded 1 goal in almost 3 games played.

For me, the big thing I'd say is that Moyes will just keep it simple for him. Like he will likely just play right back for the rest of the season, and hopefully 3 games becomes 18 good games and he's started. I worry more about say someone like a Beto, I'm not sure if with him he just had 1 good game. It doesn't feel as repeatable, but hopefully it is.

It could also be bias, but I don't remember being as convinced by Keane. I remember being a bit underwhelmed by him, but hoping he would kick on.

Dont know where else to put this - I reporting a few bits:

- TFG going to invest in increased scouting and coaching in the academy.

- We came close to getting getting Mason Melia

- We have a structure for a permanent deal for Broja - but may go back to Chelsea to renegotiate.

- We have significant PSR headroom and are looking to invest in every position with a decent transfer budget.
