I wish we did that instead of O Brien. We paid a price in line with the market, but it was 1/3 of a limited budget and many weaknesses to cover. Yet the manager has no use for him.

O’Brien is in line of Thelwell’s strategy of ‘ buy young players, develop them , sell them on for more money” . I would imagine that part of the conversation with Moshiri was : “ If Utd make a £70 mill offer you’re selling Branthwaite “ “ Ok , can we spend £30/40 mill on a new CB then? “ . Not before he’s sold no “ . “ So if Branthwaite is sold on deadline day , we can’t get a replacement in ? “ “ That’s right, you can spend £16/17 mill from your allocated pot if you want to “
So I see O’Brien as fulfilling two of Thelwell’s needs, short term cheap cover for Branthwaite if he’s sold late, development potential in the long term. I’ve no idea if I’m right though!

If you wish to preclude anyone whose opinion you consider less valuable than your own it is probable you only wish to expound your own opinions unchallenged and unexamined.
Forums are for debating and by their nature are inclusive not exclusive.

Plus if we do get £70m in for Branthwaite the price for centre halves goes up for Everton.
