Maybe our first team prospects haven't been good enough then?
Absolutely (although luck - see Davies as an example - also plays a part). Fans of any club, and I'm as guilty as anyone over many years, always over-rate their own youth players.
And going out on loan is playing for another club full-time.
I get what you're saying but not 100% sure it is the same when you have the safety blanket of a PL academy set-up where you are highly regarded to go back to at the end of the day. (Of course, it is different for someone scrapping around on loan in the National League.)

Would you advise Juan Mata, David Silva, Mesut Ozil to 'toughen up'?
I can guarantee you that they have toughened up plenty since their youth days. First team football requires a degree of mental toughness that youth and reserve games don't.

You get kicked you get back up. You make a mistake you put it behind you and don't dwell on it. All in front of thousands upon thousands of spectators who want you to have a crap game and howl and boo every mistake. That's the toughening up that's required to make it as a top player.

That just comes with experience from top flight play, you dont have to go out to a hoofball league to man up.

That type isn't he though? You know, physically slight, flair player.

Imagine telling any of them they had to go to gladiator school to succeed when they were 19.
Ye fair enough,I do think though Dave you are going over board on the lad,I understand we all have different opinions on players, I can see were you are coming from with the lad he has a good left peg,but he is not going to get much game time here so game time somewhere else won't hurt him.

They're all at first team level aren't they?
No. They simply aren't - I'm not sure of any player whose official first team debut is recorded as a friendly? And the Kras and Norwich games were 1st team games on paper only. The reality was that they had no implications for the team in the respective competitions and were played virtually free of expectation.

For instance imagine the difference in reaction if that game against Kras meant we had dropped out of the qualifying places? Would there have been the same pats on the back for the players involved? Or would the atmosphere in Goodison have been the same at the KO against Norwich if Martinez had still been in charge instead of the general feeling of goodwill that Unsworth/Royle had?

It's not about the hoofing or lack of silky passing movement (which incidentally is free from a huge number of top flight games where hoofing often takes precedent) but the expectations and pressures of actual competitive football.
