Koeman: "Barkley looking for a new challenge"

Didn't certain "trusted ITKs" state that a contract hadn't even been put on the table until just prior to the end of last season?

That would place a different complexion on things.
That's what I thought myself. The negotiations, offer and talk of the new contract began around April time. That's when I personally got wind of it anyways. But who knows, maybe it had been on the table far sooner and Barkley was dragging his feet with in, winding it down, bluffing to get an even more improved offer. That might be unlikely but who knows.

I will say this though. If the truth ever gets spouted and that was the case, deliberately running his contract down into his last year, costing the club millions, he's even more of a disgrace.

The point was in response to "To sit on their bench & help fill their home grown player quota"

Plenty have done it - Sinclair and Delph being quick examples.

He said he wants Champions League, I don't think Ross Barkley starts regularly at a Chelsea, Man City or Spurs.

Barkley wouldn't even start regularly at Everton this season.

I agree about Chelsea and City. He wouldn't go right in and be a starter. At Spurs he'd be in the same position as Janssen was: take your chance and prove yourself in order to grab a starting place regularly. Barkley can do that there...certainly better equipped to do it than Janssen. Arsenal looks a much better bet for him though starting place wise.

But he's a massive talent. Anyone who did write him off to be a big star in the PL at an elite club would do so at their peril.

It's not unreasonable if you are convinced that the player will sign (that's probably what the board thought) but it then leaves you only one window (this one) to shift the player if he doesn't, with his price diminishing by the day.

Yep which is where I agree they have been a bit naive.

They probably had been given indications he'd be willing to sign though. There was nothing really to suggest he wouldn't...

Agree here Dave.

Personally, I don't think he'd be a guaranteed starter anywhere in the top seven, including us now.

But he certainly has all the talent to be a star.

And if it's the case he simply wants to move on to try and realise that potential, then so be it. It's his decision. He has the right to make that call on his own future.

P

Problem is Joey he wants to go and there is nothing we can do about it. From a football side of things it's no great loss to Everton, and as you have said there seems to be issues away from the game.
On a personal level I hope he is OK, There are a lot of nutters around Liverpool and if has got mixed up with some it's a real shame
Ok he wants to go, posters have short memories Ross is young and will do well elsewhere he is not as bad as posters are making out!

His best ever season was Martinez's final one here....and that even after clocking off for the last two months with the rest of the refuseniks.

I agree, he's defo gone. Koeman doesn't want him and he doesn't relish playing for a manager who cant support him. And he'll go because he's a player in high demand form the top clubs, despite what Koeman stated yesterday about no bids....there's no bids at this stage because Everton are over a barrel and can be left with him until the last week of the window.

..bizarrely, it might actually be good news for Everton if there's demand from more than one club in the last week of the window. I think Spurs, Arsenal and Man Utd are circling. It's just a matter of who breaks ranks first. I agree that Everton are over a barrel but they might be able to squeeze a reasonable fee if they sense more than one club are very keen.

IMO he has assessed the situation with his agent.

Realised he probably will not be an automatic starter any more.

Realised that the club are very keen on Gylfi and the emergence also of the likes of Lookman / Dowell and Davies means he really is going to have to fight hard for a place in the starting XI and he has bottled it.

Probably getting a move whilst his stock is still reasonably high.

Think we all have to move on from this instead of speculating why he is going. We now know he doesn't want to be here and play for Everton. Nothing we can do now he has made his decision. It might be good for him to have a fresh start then again it might be the opposite. We have all been 50-50 with opinions about him so that won't matter anymore as he doesn't want to play for us. What I do know for certain is that the Club offered him a contract (wanted him to stay) but Barkley has snubbed it (doesn't want to stay or wanted a stupid amount of money). The boy we have nurtured since a kid has decided to decline a contract so no doubt in anyones mind he wants out. Doesn't want to be here, wants to play for someone else, doesn't want to fight for a place/thinks he is worth more than the club thinks he's worth. See ya Ross.

The only way a top 4 club will take Ross is if they get him on the cheap. As of now doesn't seem like there is much demand, no top 4 club banging down Everton's door to snatch him up.

I really doubt the club were prepared to pay alledged wages of 100k to not start games. I know no player is guaranteed a starting place, but you'd like to think the players we have bought this summer would have eased the pressure on Ross being our only creative outlet and allowed him to flourish within the team. Sadly that isn't going to be the case anymore.
