So he was never 1st choice then? yes i do believe he was behind him as Jelavic was picked ahead of him.

Martinez must have thought he wasn't good enough to lead the line as well because he signed Lukaku, which brings us back to the point that a club in our financial position can't afford to be spending £5m on 29 yr old back ups with nothing coming in at the end of it.

Lukaku only came about when he enquired about demba ba. Which at that stage was only because we had money to spend after selling Vic.

What tells the tale is that he was never ever picked to start a league game for his even though Jelavic was in poor form yet you are trying to construct reasons as to why he was 1st choice.

he wasn't bought as backup though, he was bought to compete with jelavic. let's be honest, teams like liverpool are spending £13m on backups like borini who are a bigger waste. spurs spent £26m on someone who's been utter dirge, it happens. it's a squad game at the end of the day.

Whenever someone says flagged an image pops up of lots of folk waving bright coloured flags to the person whose been "flagged" as some form of flag celebration. An Olympics like celebration you may suggest, except there's no medals involved but the person who is being "flagged" does receive a mini replica flag of their choice as a free gift.
