Kone Signs on 3 Year Deal

Disagree about Fellaini, he's a central midfielder.

He can clearly play in both positions, where you think he excels the most is down to opinion.

He can play in both positions, you gave your opinion about his best position and I gave mine.

Exactly, just making the point that it is inaccurate to say he is or isn't a striker, he is both regardless of what you think his best position is.

Fellaini was playing as a center forward at times last season, but he never played as a striker... there is a difference there. Kone is and out and out striker.

Lad, you want the moon on a stick.

What a magnificently absurd assessment.

I'm simply saying that we must not make a habit of signing average players coming to the end of their positional lifespans for multi-million pound fees. We already have an ageing first 11, several of whom we are unlikely to recoup any money on.

If Distin, Howard, Hibbert, Pienaar and Osman all retire within the next two years, or see their performances drop off so much that we don't want them starting any more, how are we going to replace them? We'd need either an unusually high number of reserves/youth teamers to make the step up, or a shedload of cash. Asking for that to be considered when setting transfer targets is not revolutionary.

we dont know that mate, and regardless we have jelavic who would fetch us £6 mil+ to go towards the deal we should be making it happen when he is this seasons Benteke people will be moaning we never went in for him he is class

True, no one knows exactly how much we have to spend before sales but going off what most people are saying we won't have the capacity to spend that much money on one player.

I seriously doubt it if we could sell Jelavic for £6 million in this window, for once it will be nice to have 2 good strikers and 1 back up in Anichebe at the club. I'm really looking forward to that prospect, we will actually have choice in the striking department if we sign Kone.

That 'one per unit' part is interesting to me.

Does that mean a keeper, defender, middleman and a forward?

Be happy with that. As long as the midfielder is totally boss.

If the defender is Alcaraz and the forward is Kone, we'll have only spent £5m. We could get by with a loan or bosman 'keeper as backup. So we should still have plenty of money to spend on a midfielder.

i dont care about resale!

i just think he is bang average and at 30 he aint goona change now!

plus he wasnt even the best player in a ****e wigan side but yet worth £5m!!

So who else should we sign. I have seen a few names banded about on the forum but all are riskier than what Kone would be for 5m in my opinion.

Bony has scored 100 in a 179 games so far. Most of these in the Dutch league. Would cost 10.5m
Negredo has scored 122 in 267 games so far. Would cost upwards of 18m
Darren Bent has scored 146 in 350 games so far. Would cost more i would say than Kone
Andreas Cornelius has scored 28 in 64 games so far. He cost Cardiff 7.5m
Jermain Defoe has scored 187 goals in 508 games so far. Again he would cost more than Kone

Arouna Kone has scored 106 goals in 294 games so far.

Kone will only cost 5m and knows the league. His record is on a par with most of the strikers that i have seen named in this thread and if after a season he hasnt been a success we could sell for at least 3.5m i would imagine.

The lad needs to be given a chance as he obviously has talent, as shown last season scoring double figures for a relegated team. With better service and better players around him i reckon we could have a bargain on our hands.

Time will tell i guess, thats even if he signs, but i believe he could do very well for us.

Most salient point yet - and perfectly simple. If we can get 6 years of service to a high level then it will more than be worth the trade-off in lack of resale value, given we've only spent £5 million. For example Yakubu we bought at 25; in theory giving us plenty of resale value, but lost twice as much as we're even paying for Kone (if the reports are to be believed) only 3 years later.

When we talk about resale value we are aiming to get a player for a net cost of at most zero. That means we are actually looking for players whose value will INCREASE within a few years and then we can literally engineer a sale at a higher price, recouping his wages on the way.

Even Kone comes at 5M this year and leaves 10 years later (while still performing at an acceptable level), we are still losing ~15m over 10 years, not counting inflation.
(assuming he costs us 1m/year in wages, bonuses and various fees, which translate to ~15k-20k/week)

Obviously we don't know what's happening in regards to ins and outs, I have a feeling that kone may well be a replacement for jelavic who I can't see being a Martinez player whatsoever. It's a balancing act IMO regarding older players, you need experienced players and players at there peak which alot tend to be between 27-31. You can't always have resale value on every player! However you must have on a good % of players.

Distin has proved excellent value for 5M, signing him at 30 and having 5yrs great service out of him. He's gonna need replacing very soon and I'd happily buy lescott for 5M at 30 as a replacement. Same as I'd happily have Donovan back in dec for free to add to the squad.

It's getting the balance right that's all, more often than not the teams refusing to buy older players and just younger with resale value tend to struggle in the league and still don't make money of a large % of the players they buy.
