Kone Signs on 3 Year Deal

Then it must be true

Interesting what Martinez says about the cruciate meaning he is a young 29. If correct this could be a very good deal for us, if we complete it. I still think it is nearer £5m as I think Whelan said that.

Could be a top striker for the next 4 years.

Martinez called him a perfect striker and I also think he would be a great transfer. Whenever I've seen him playing, he always seems to take up very good attacking positions and dangerous runs between defenders.

Signing Kone should not automatically lead to selling Jelavic. Jelavic is probably at his lowest market value currently too.
He was superb when we first signed him and could recapture that form under Martinez.
Also we need a squad. All the sides we hope to compete with have 3-4 quality players in each position. I hope we can promote a few youngsters, add a couple of inexpensive, creative deals and buy 1 hopefully 2 class additions. And keep Fellaini and Baines.

The more i think about it the more i am warming to this transfer. We will be getting a complete player who doesnt have to learn the game, he is quick, stong, technically very good and he isnt a a bad slotter. This could be a very good signing.

Jela would be a good fit to play next to Kone I reckon. Kone is a pretty creative type, he could be just the man to make it ricochet perfectly off Jelavic's thigh and into the goal.

Jelavic - not a player as far as I can see. The worrying thing was that he didn't even make an impact off the bench last season when he was dropped to it. I think that's pretty poor, tbh. If someone came in and offered us cash anywhere near approaching the £4-5M mark Martinez would be mad not to take it.

Who has indicated that Kone deal means Jellys departure...Kone and Jelavic together could be boss!

Echo mentioned it 'Kone’s imminent arrival casts some doubt on Nikica Jelavic’s future, after the Croatian endured a classic case of second season syndrome following his explosive introduction from Rangers.

But Martinez refused to say whether the Ivorian would be a complement or a replacement for the Croat.'

And a few fans have been suggesting it too. I think we would be mad to sell him. He looked a 20m striker at the end of 2012 season. I would play them together and drop Felli back to where he should play. And use Anichebe and Barkley too depending on opposition.

Jelavic was dreadful last season no disguising that. But the same could be said of Johnson (Who I thought was a cracking signing), Yakubu, Beattie... over the last decade. No striker ever improved, but regressed alarmingly, yet we turned average/raw defenders into world beaters. Even Vaughan who looked a real gem never progressed as he should have done.

When we talk about resale value we are aiming to get a player for a net cost of at most zero. That means we are actually looking for players whose value will INCREASE within a few years and then we can literally engineer a sale at a higher price, recouping his wages on the way.

Even Kone comes at 5M this year and leaves 10 years later (while still performing at an acceptable level), we are still losing ~15m over 10 years, not counting inflation.

(assuming he costs us 1m/year in wages, bonuses and various fees, which translate to ~15k-20k/week)

That's a rather narrow way of looking at this whole situation. Perhaps we should try: spend 5m on Kone and Xm on Y player, and then when we qualify for champions league within the next couple of years we recoup (say) 20m. I think that would compensate for the lack of 'resale value' of one or two 'older' players who could come in and make a difference.

IMaWT...

Vaughan had bad luck with injuries tbf. I thought he was going to be something special before them all. Moyes liked him too, he could run the channels like a pro.

As for Kone, I'm rather indifferent. He terrorised Heitinga but the latter was proper **** last season. Aside from that and assorted MoTD clips, I can't say I've really seen too much of him. 5-6.5mil does seem a little steep for us but relative to the market at the moment, I don't think it's astronomically high. It'll be interesting to see if he'll be the lone striker or played alongside another, him and Vic would be a big handful I feel.

This summarises the Moyes syndrome.

Sports direct website think newcastle are making a late bid for Kone. Wouldn't be the first time that a deal didn't go through despite it looking nailed on.

Hope they blow us out of the water with wages and we pull out of the deal.
