Last Film You Watched

Spotted her in some mini series back in the early 1990's and she was the most beautiful lady I had seen (Audrey Hepburn aside)You just knew then she was going to be an A lister.

It`s a strange one, as she`s not txt book attractive, but deffo is.

It seems to be, as she`s got older and is no longer rom com material, she`s getting better / more serious film roles

Blade Runner 2049 on bluray with our home beamer and surround sound...just as well as it was all style over substance. Nice visuals and worth a watch but it's not more than a 6 or 7/10.

Things the original did better:

- more human characters...literally and emotionally...too many staid stoic planks with no life about them in 2049. The dialogue was very stagey too, whereas in the original it was a mix of naturalist and stagey.

- the music...i'm a fan of dark synth drones, but Blade Runner is all about the soaring epic synth melodies...missing in 2049.

- the baddie and the final fight...we love the Rutger Hauer fight because firstly he's easily overpowering Deckard and secondly he decides to save him as a parting statement on life rather than fight to the death. It's deep as hell. In 2049 it was just a cliched fight to the death.

- pace...the sheer slowness of the walking n talking in 2049 was almost at parody levels. The original was a slow-burn but not like that.

- internal logic...2049 had stupid plot-holes.

I still enjoyed 2049, especially the visual and audio feasts...it's a good film, just not close to great.

I can`t agree with you there about Blade Runner 2049.

As you know the original Blade Runner is and will likely remain my favourite film of all time.

However the second one is magnificent in it`s own right.

Villeneuve knew from the outset he if he tried to make a film in a similar vein to the first, he`d fail and he had to get it right or it would end him.

So he went the other way.

Rather than the beautiful, textured, visual feast, with the perfect Vangelis sound track of the first, he went for stark, metallic colours and minimalist surroundings, with a dry synth soundtrack and apart from the beautiful hologram girlfriend, characters that fitted the environs of the film.

Ryan Gosling was perfectly cast too.

It was a massive gamble and imo, it worked magnificently.

I`ve now watched it at least six times, the second time was at a multiplex on the biggest screen by myself, as I wanted to truly appreciate it.

It`s a completely different film to the first and should be viewed as such.

I enjoy your film posts as ever, and I did view it as a different film but of course it's gonna be compared to the original no matter what.

But let's say the original never existed and 2049 came out exactly like this, I'd still have the same criticisms and the same score. It left me cold, I wasn't wowed. But I appreciated it for what it was. a 7/10 is fair, like other ambitious sci-fi which left me feeling similar: Sunshine, Moon, Tarkovsky's Solaris, The Andromeda Strain etc.

MOON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s one of the best sci-fi films ever made, it’s a masterpiece.

If the first Blade Runner had never been made, 2049 would be seen as a masterpiece, however it’ll always be compared to the original and they’re lies the problem.

we do have similar tastes but differ in our 10/10's. 1984 is for example a 10/10 sci-fi for me, but i expect it gets a respectable 7/10 from you...i understand why, it's not a favourite film of everyones.

Silent running
Awesome movie, quiet, thoughtful and a simple story. One of my all time faves along with Alien. The 70's decade of sci fi film making has rarely been bettered.

Also just watched a Netflix movie 'When angels sleep, thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish, a stressful watch but quite different from anything else out at the moment....oh beware subtitle haters !!!

I, Daniel Blake.

Truly powerful film and genuinely scary that there are people going through this.

We should be ashamed as the 5th richest country in new World that these are the situations some people face.

Just watched Vice about [Poor language removed] Cheney and his virtual running of the Bush administration.

What a terrific movie, it was written and directed by Adam McKay and has the same sort of feel as The Big Short (another wonderful film)

This is scary and worrying about how much power he had and the control over the government. The cast is marvellous and the acting even better, both Bale and Steve Carrell are fantastic along with Amy Adams

@AndyC i think you’d enjoy this one

Haven't seen it yet Chris, but others have also said it's well worth a viewing ;)
