Robocop:

An exercise in violently sadistic sci-fi action with an undeniably brilliant layer of satire and deep religious overtones, Verhoeven's '87 shoot 'em up is endlessly rewatchable.

Peter Weller is just outstanding in the role of the tragic cop who is brutally executed, and his resurrected fearless bad-ass supercop.
I like the design of the Robocop suit - it resembles a futuristic US concept supercar, all chrome lines and sleek styling.

Plus it's got great quotable lines, truly horrible bad guys, some nightmarishly nasty gore and splatter effects, and a brilliantly realised near-future world going on in the background of the movie, glimpsed through news reports and OTT adverts.

It's a landmark Hollywood effort with wit, intelligence and a clever script - a "superhero with a headache" is how it has been described.

Watch out for the mental nightclub scene when Robo slaps the pistol out of a baddie's hand, which is caught by a raver who continues dancing, not missing a beat ha ha ha

Gabriel Byrne is a really great actor.
Not sure that film would work so well if released now as it’s been copied so many times.
I've seen it many times but not for about a decade, its amazing how well it still holds up.
I think maybe because its such a slick mix of 40s noir, 80s gloss, 90's edge, with superb actors across the board underpinned by one of the greatest screenplays ever.

I remember seeing it on a Friday night then going again on the Sunday just to see if it did actually work and being even more stunned.

I saw The Worst Person in the World, having heard nothing but great things about it, and while I think it was good and very watchable, it was some way short of the masterpiece it's being made out to be. The opening stretch is good, but it kind of loses momentum midway before picking up again. Maybe it's a bit unfair of me, but I usually find it hard to come to any film that's had so much praise and not feel let down in some way. But it's definitely worth seeing.

Never seen this one before. Watching it tonight. Hardly a date movie by any means but apparently an essential one.
Looking forwards to a challenging and educational film about something in history that I feel I should really be more clued up about.

Another incredibly harrowing movie based on the murderous regime of the Khmer Rouge is a film called 'First they killed my father'. Based on a true story via the experiences of a young girl who survived the genocide.

I’ve been to cambodia a few times. First in 2005. It was noticeable that you didn’t see many men of a certain age. Whole generation almost wiped out. Those that you did see were more often than not ex-Khmer

…met him once, had no idea who he was.

On a little plane from Dublin to Galway (going the races) I was sitting next to him at the back and one of my mates whispered from the other side of the aisle, ‘that‘s Gabriel Byrne, he was in Usual Suspects’. None the wiser, I asked if he was GB and he said he was.

What a nice bloke. Said his Mum lives in Galway, we chatted all the way, told me about Grace Jones and the likes. Even came to find me at the luggage bit to say goodbye.
