Watched ‘All Quiet on the Western Front”

Thought it was excellent. Proper bleak as well.
The missus and I watched this yesterday, a proper film.

We were so happy 5 mins into this after we couldn't make it through 45 minutes of Everything, Everywhere All At Once. We watch literally anything and almost always all the Oscar nominated films, but we looked at each other after 45 mins of Everything, Everywhere and said please can we end this monstrosity. We both agreed, and started All Quiet.

Prey (2022). Largely enjoyed it, though it takes a little while to get going and is easy to pull apart if you think about it. Best to enjoy it for what it is, which is a decent action film that doesn't ruin the predator name. 6/10.

My big criticism of it, was that it was too short and as a result, the characters and plot had no time to evolve.

I loved the fact, that they took it back to Western times and I could also see bits of Bone Tomahawk in there. Which was a nice touch.

I really enjoyed 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' myself.

It is a little bit 'out there' to be fair, but very original.

Stagecoach (1939)

Old westerns just don't feel dated to me. This one had some impressive and very well made action sequences and some crazy stunts (performed by both men and the poor horses). I obviously don't buy the narrative that the native americans were the villains, but it's a product of it's time I guess. This is the first John Wayne movie I've ever watched in full, and it's a pretty great one, I must say. 8/10

Rio Bravo
The Shootist
True Grit
The Cowboys

Have you got some viewing coming...

Phantom of the Opera (1943)
The worst of the universal monster movies I've seen so far. I didn't expect much from this in advance, and the story is actually fairly okay, but the (female) opera singing made large chunks of the film almost unbearable to watch. 5/10

Is that the one with Claude reins? I like it but i love the story. Have you seen them Hammer version with Herbet Lom?
The best will always be the silent Lon Chaney version, which has different scores depending which verison you buy, the Gabriel Thibaudoux is the best IMO

The one with Claude Rains yes. I thought he was the best part of the movie, especially before he started donning the mask. I also thought the story was good, I just didn't really enjoy the music. Obviously I expected some music due to it being about an Opera, it just went on forever lol

Creature from the Black Lagoon
Really pleased with the final movie in the Universal monster collection boxset. Great creature design and some fun underwater action. 7/10

The eight universal monster movies in the collection from best to worst:
1. The Wolf-Man (1941) 9/10
2. Frankenstein (1931) 9/10
3. The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) 8/10
4. Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) 7/10
5. The Invisible Man (1933) 7/10
6. Dracula (1931) 6/10
7. The Mummy (1932) 6/10
8. Phantom of the Opera (1943) 5/10

Not in the collection, but still worth mentioning (it'd be my third favorite if included):
Frankenstein meets The Wolf-Man (1943) 8/10
