Last Film You Watched

Sound of Metal (2019)

Only got around to watching this when it was on TV last night and I'm very glad I did.

Riz Ahmed's recovering addict Ruben has his life disrupted due to sudden hearing loss and struggles to cope with what it all means. Ever reliable, Ahmed evokes the portrayal of denial sadly and beautifully, and his character's attempts to cling onto his former life are absolutely heart-wrenching.

You'll enjoy this if (like me) you're into anything with emotional substance and well acted characters who seem lost in life against a vast mid-west style backdrop.

9/10

A mate put me onto this.

Apparently it cost 45K to make, which if true is astounding.

A young couple crash their car on a remote Highland lane. The lady is heavily pregnant and they seek help at a nearby farm, which is home to an insane family of farmers. Very bad stuff happens.

For the money this is a very good film and as it progresses, they really rack the tension up, with a full on cast of unknowns.

Deckard is a skin job, there's thousands of him, waiting to be thawed out to chase down the latest set of replicants with ideas the authorities don't like. Batty is the difference, an upgraded mind. It is this creator vs created that plays out foreshadowed with Tyrell, then the dove scene of revelation. There's every chance Deckard has the abilities of the rest of the skin jobs but isn't programmed to use them - consider how Leon dies and who is responsible, no training and no experience and a perfect headshot with an unknown weapon? Basic programming. They're all killers first. Militaristic purposes first and foremost.
I get all that.

More the fact that Pris goes doing backflips for no particular reason and that if Zhora wanted to get away then she had ample opportunity to put more distance between herself and Deckard as he's completely lost her at one point. But she instead chooses to look nervous while squatting on some subway steps.

They're just a couple of minor but iffy film-making decisions in an otherwise near perfect film.

A hidden gem I’d never seen before. Another random film directed by a Frenchman that Ron Perlman is in (This time portraying a great Ape!) The lovely lady that befriends Matrix from Commando also giving a good rendition of a different hominid. Great shooting locations and a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting watch!
