I don't want to take @Eggs on, but "man called Otto" was dire too.

I am inclined to agree with you, there's really nothing in his canon that stands out. Perhaps Philadelphia, but the writing and Washington were the draw there.

Trying to think of his movies that broke out from his middle of the road stuff.

Perhaps road to perdition and saving private ryan (for me a bit overrated), and I think both would have benefitted from a different lead

I avoid his movies now.

I'm sure he is a very nice man, but for me he's only a solid actor. I do think he was great in Philadelphia and also very good in the Burbs
