Last Film You Watched

I'll caveat that it's some years since I've seen it so y'know changing tastes and all that, but I thought it was unsubtle, simple, exploitative, charmless, over the top and a bit... trashy.

FWIW I don't rate the Godfather either.
I think that's the point about 'scarface' as it's the excess and greed of the 80's personified. Wrapped up in the fear of an outsider succeeding* with their american dream.

Is it just Pacino you can't get on board with? What's to dislike with the godfather?

Yeah, i totally get that, still don't enjoy it though. No problem with Pacino, like him in loads of stuff. Godfather, I'll quote meself from earlier in the thread:

"They're quite boring aren't they? I mean, not all of it's boring, but the boring bits are really boring. And I find the framing, cinematography, sound design and direction, all the technical stuff, really flat and uninspiring.
And I know everyone picks on the third one, but on multiple levels its just not a good film."

Is that about III? because three is a disaster. The first two are epics, in the classic hollywood terms, like 'Lawrence of Arabia' for instance. Michael is a euphemism for the new world, initially prepared to give his all, sign up and serve, turn his back on privilege and find his own way. It is then a study in decay and corruption, how power and expectation as well as greed so alter this character, firstly becoming as bad as his enemies and then much worse.
It is a story untellable in a sharp and fast 90 minutes.

All very fine points. It still bores the arse off me.

I could talk Jaws and early Spielberg all day.
Another image that really stands out to me, is from a deleted scene. The death of the young boy Alex at the beach.

I mean, that's a bit graphic like, and would have made the on rails focus and move famous shot of Schneider a lot more difficult to highlight.

Anyway, speak of the devil... arsenal vs newcastle on tv now in the caribou cup, and then jaws is on itv4 directly after at 10pm. Win.

I read that when they did the initial test screening, it was too much for the audience, so that was one of the main reasons it was chopped.

Same reason that you don`t actually see the dog get chomped early on.

I do agree with you, as if they`d have kept it in, they`d potentially have had another iconic image from the film.

I've also read they felt revealing the size of the shark that early lessened the jump scare in the 'you're gonna need a bigger boat' scene.

They also got "lucky" with the shark malfunctioning so often, they went with the viewpoint shots for the majority until the final act as well.
And so used the music to represent the threat of the shark. Just to be clear, I was on the sharks side in the sequel, didn't like a single one of those kids off jollying about where they knew they shouldn't have been. And three was shot for 3D and was just awful.
