Last Film You Watched

This is a really old film isn't it? I'm really bad with old films, have a tendency to dismiss them due to age/being in black and white, like some kind of pre-pubescent Michael Bay fan. Should I throw all my ill conceived convictions out the window and watch this?
Yeah, it's mid 50s I think.
There are certainly changes/evolutions in style (particularly directorial, editing and acting) and technical proficiency as you go through the history of cinema. I like watching old films to see these innovations and the sometimes fantastic achievements using studio trickery and ingenious solutions that you'd now just throw software at.
But (just like now really) the quality of film making/acting/editing/direction etc. can vary massively.

This is definitely one of the best, it's a brilliantly directed and paced film, really tense and with very strong performances

Not a great fan of costume drama/period stuff but I like Mike Leigh and Tim Spall a lot so gave this a go. It's a top performance from Spall, all gruff and surly as the great artist and the design and period detail is very strong, supporting cast are good too, particularly Dorothy Atkinson as his doting housekeeper. It took some criticism for pace and being a bit dull. It is long and I can see that it wouldn't be everyone's thing but it went rather well with a Sunday afternoon hangover and a cup of tea. The real attraction is the cinematography. The film is about art and inspiration and the look of the film is peerless, whether shooting the stunning British landscapes or the artist at work in studios and galleries the use of light and colour is often breathtaking.
Liked it.

Tony Hancock did a funny skit on the main premise of the film :

Oh definitely. I'm not a massive fan of old films, but I've tried out a few classics with mixed results. This really was one of the most interesting films I've seen in a long time, I can't imagine someone not enjoying it.

Criminal that it didn't win a major award for cinematography, it is stunning.

Gave that 'Spike Island' a bash the other day. Movie about five lads trying to get their bands CD to the Stone Roses during their legendary gig at said location. The soundtrack is brilliant but the same can't be said for the movie itself. Started well but fell into a massive cliche ridden trap.
