Ok, fair enough. In the last, what, 5 seasons, (maybe 4), they have won a charity Shield, and spent gazillions to do so.

Cant be arsed looking it up, but out of the top 5 clubs in the world, I would hazard a guess that that does not stack up that well against the other 4.
This is going off topic from me. So I'll end here, but I think United were in a unique situation to fail, like Liverpool before them.

They were holding on to their top spot largely through the force of will of one man - Ferguson. He built that club in his image. He was United's success. Both before and after Glazer (BG and AG?). When he left there was a massive hole to fill. Not just anyone can do it. Honestly, probably no one could.

But they brought in Moyes. Bad mistake. They tumble down the league, some of their basic Ferguson players lost form and confidence...in addition to very few Moyes' buys...just not a good season. So they sacked Moyes, brought in Van Gaal and backed him hugely...he just isn't the right guy for them. But who is? They have a real fear of Jose for numerous reasons. Pep was always City-bound. Who else can fill in for Fergie? Anyone?

The club relied too much on a single pillar. It was pulled. I don't blame the owners, as it was one hell of a pillar and it was there before they got there.

United's story is not replicated elsewhere in world football...except with Liverpool. Who also haven't won too much once the fall took hold. Money sometimes isn't enough. You need purpose, consistency, and momentum. Those things are crippling both LFC and United. They are so desperate to win NOW that they can't accept that they are now behind the clubs that were chasing them and that they need to prepare to chase.

City and (Chelsea LOL) and Arsenal were always nipping at their heels. The Moyes year gave them enough to overtake...United hasn't accepted that they aren't what they were yet, and continue to buy flash without really having a good fundamental plan for moving forward.

That MAY be the owners' fault, but I think they generally leave football to the football men...they're the ones failing right now.

I think we can all agree that what we really want is some Arab nut-job who lost his mind whilst trying to count his own money and now his only route back to sanity is to spend it quicker than he's pumping it out of the ground, failing that a crooked Russian on Putin's plutonium list who needs a safe haven or black hole for his cash.

These Yanks seem far too sensible to me so on the off-chance it could the China-man who's misinterpreted his fortune cookie or tea leaves or something, I vote China.

I'd fault him for cutting the budget short and not finding a buyer sooner. Nobody wants to buy a distressed property (although, Tom Hanks has money and likes Villa). I do like what Lerner did redeveloping near the ground, but unlikely he'll be remembered for such.

Yeah, he needs to see Villa arent just an old house to stop pumping money into when it just becomes a money pit.

Good point. When the story broke in the times in December it was said to have European based investors involved too. Will be interesting to see if there still are if/when the deal goes through.
Gossip at a match about a month ago suggested a former Everton director, resident in Cheshire & family worth a few bob, was in the loop. Just gossip though via someone with connections at FF. Probably a load of bollocks but would be an interesting option.

Was Gill there before the Glaziers or did they bring him in?

I suppose the one good thing about our yanks is that they are after an investment so surely they would want to increase our value with a new stadium and at least some sort of success?

David Gill was there before them mate.

Was a rumour ages ago that. Would be very interesting if it is still bubbling.

I didn't realize Sunderland and Fulham were PL stalwarts, my mistake.

Sunderland are routinely top-ten in wage spending, escaped relegation by a prayer the past few years, and will need more than prayers to stay up this year. Khan took a Europa League finalist that routinely challenged us in the table, and that finished 12th when he bought them, and relegated them in the first year. he's gone through five managers in two-and-half years, and they are four points off relegation to the third division.

if THAT's your definition of successful management, then I can see why you're optimistic. This is what the Gwladys end can look like when we go down under the next Short/Khan:

you can do better mate

Have to say I'm shocked. Like all blues under 25 (I can still pull that one off for another month), I've never known anything other than life under Kenwright. After years of false dawns its a bit surreal all this.
