League of Ireland 2024

Oh my sweet Lord! Vikingur miss a penalty 8 minutes into added time.

Rovers scrape through and Sparta Prague next week.

A little matter of FAI cup match v Bohs on Friday.

Ref a disgrace btw. Did his best to give Vikingur every chance. Clear push in back on Rovers defender before the penalty tackle, but ignored. Two other clear fouls ignored and an obvious foul throw ignored.

Anyway KOH !!

Shamrock Rovers manager Bradley expressed his delight with how the night panned out when he spoke to RTÉ Sport's Adrian Eames after the victory.

"I think I've hit every emotion you can think of. It was an incredible night in Tallaght," he said.

"A big performance from the players and they've come up with a special night that will live long in the memory."

Bradley spoke of his relief at Nikolaj Hansen's last-gasp penalty miss for Vikingur given his own team were in a disadvantageous position.

"I just didn't want extra time. We were down to 10 men, we were out on our feet, playing against a team that are a really good team - 10 internationals within their squad, they know what they're doing - and I was just hoping that it didn't go to extra time because they would have been real favourites to go and win it," he said.

"It's a massive win for us and for a league as a whole. When you're representing the league in the Champions League, it's important you try and win games and the players have done that night, so it's a special night for this club and it's a special night for the league.'

Vikingur are 5 points clear at the top of the Icelandic Premier Division and have only lost one of their 14 games.

6 flipping yellow cards against Rovers and there hasn't been one bad tackle. Ref an idiot

Didn't realise the clown of a ref was English!

Byrne's night turned sour – perhaps bitter, depending on what would happen afterwards – as he was sent off for a second yellow for a silly scythe-movement tackle on Ingimundarson with 16 minutes left, though the Dubliner had clearly been fouled in the build-up.

English referee Jarred Gillett also missed a clear foul on Farrugia, the locals incensed; before Rovers had properly cleared, Viktor Oerlygur Andrason had a half-chance but Pohls bundled it away.

Gillett failed to spot an even more obvious infringement on Seán Hoare and assistant manager Glenn Cronin saw yellow for arguing with the fourth official when the notice was put up for the injury time that would befall a ragged Hoops.

I never heard of Gillett before. Has he reffed many Everton games?I hope I never see Gillett again

Two yellows for Jack Byrne, (2nd was stupid by Byrne in fairness) but five others booked and there were no real dirty play from either side.

Just found this!!!

Jarred Gillett – Queensland, Australia

A Liverpool fan who also doesn't referee Everton matches.

Very tired performance from Rovers after their 10 man heroics against Vikingur on Tuesday.

Bohs dominating throughout and lead by a penalty conceded by a tired defender.

Rovers just hit the bar, 6 minutes plus added left.

They have to lift themselves again for Sparta Prague on Tuesday.

Not football, but anyway this must be the thread to ask : is it worth watching ?

Well worth watching - the best field sport in the world, although I only played Gaelic Football and soccer.

This is the GAA Thread mate - https://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/gaa-2024 (In the Ale House).

Enjoy!

I will be reasonably neutral as a Dubliner 34 years in exile in Kilkenny, but leaning slightly towards Clare. It should be a cracker. 83,000 at Croke Park.

Surprised this never took off massively this side of the sea.
Great game for taking out frustration and fitness.

He is an Aussie, but yes he was terrible. I have never seen such a poor performance from a ref he gave us nothing which makes the win even better. Pity about last night and losing to such a poor team but this team Europe aside has been poor all season, scraping a win at home versus a poor Dundalk a couple of weeks ago says it all. The cash from the euro win and the sell on from Sinclair Armstrong is a god send and can see a few of the higher earners will go. Need to spend next part of season getting team ready for next year.

Having played ok, and even a great chance for Farrugia to score after their goalie gave the ball away , it is all undone by a schoolboy error in 38th minute.

At under 9 level it was drilled into us... Never pass the ball across your own area - so frustrating at this level.

All Sparta 2nd half and they lead by 2-0 with 12 minutes of normal time left.

Rovers just not at the races 2nd half after a respectable 1st half.

Ah well. Let's see who we get in Europa League - can't see any way back with 2nd leg in Prague to come.

Just too many matches in recent weeks. They were flat on Friday against Bohs after the ET win over Vikingur on Tuesday last.

At least they have no game this weekend.

Can only hope for a decent draw and run in EL and grab a European place from the League. Out of the Cup and probably too far off to challenge for league title.

Still, financially a good season.

KOH !
