2019/20 Leighton Baines.

I hate Everton because I wont be cajoled into thinking that a player like Baines was merely above average?

I think plenty of Everton players have been great, it's just that Baines is nowhere near that mantle.

And if you rubbished an Everton player I think is great would that make you hate Everton too?

Also, I haven't just compared Cole with Baines and found him lacking; I compared Baines with 4 or 5 other Everton LBs I've seen and found him lacking too.

All that is so Dave, I can think back to many LBs but for one year we do need a back up as I cannot see any LB signing in the offing ATM.

To say he isn't better than Bailey tells you everything you need to know, you've got an agenda. I've been watching Everton consistently since the start of the 80's and Baines is the best left back that we've had in that time.
He's not a defender. Not in any top 5 or 6 defenders we've had at LB since I've watched them. He was good going forward as a quasi winger when Pienaar funnelled back and covered for him.

Why are you so bothered about having a “defender” at full back? It’s the 21st century, full backs are now key components to an attacking set up. I thought as a big advocate of progressive, attacking football, an advanced full back would be right up your street.

Name them
Defenders and the ability to defend: Pejic, Bailey, Van Den Hauwe, Hinchcliffe, Naysmith, Unsworth (also Alan Harper and Distin were better defenders than him too when they had to slot in there). There's eight.

lol lol lol

I cant think of any reason we'd want a Left Back to be able to defend.

mid right Dave ... back to the glory days Yeah. I don’t seem to remember our title winning teamstgrowing away 3 goal lease with 10 mins of a game left every other week. I can’t imagine they had players thatwernt fit enough to play 90 mins and I’m pretty sure they “ believed “ in corners

To be honest I don't remember Martinez's team throwing away 3 goal leads with ten minutes left every other week either? Whats wrong with just saying they were poor in defence? They were.

Baines was part of that defence...

In your opinion...

(I think he is better than Bailey too to be fair...)

Add Mick Meagan, Sandy Brown to name a couple.

Debating Baines at his peak is one thing but if we don’t have a single full back in the academy who can do a better job than a 35 year old Baines that’s worrying. He’s not premier league standard any more. Imagine him with Siggurdson ahead of him up against Traore, Sterling, Rashford, etc. it would be an absolute slaughter.
