Leighton Baines

Wasn't a bad pen. Had Given dived to the other side it was coming back out and he'd have scored or at least it was very likely we'd have scored from him or somebody else. Thankfully it hit Given's head though.

If you don't have pace (which he doesn't) you don't get touch tight to wingers. They can feel where you are and will turn you inside out if they are even half decent
That's the reason you WOULD get touch tight. Stand off and be prepared to have your shorts turned inside out or be skinned. Baines needs to get on the heels of attackers and dont let them have room to face him up.

He's a professional and shouldnt need to be told like.

They're playing for their places again...funnily enough, just the same as they did when Martinez arrived.

Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Three games into the season means nothing. On Baines: I'm more arsed about him being a defender rather than some superannuated winger. If he knocks shots off the line and gets touch tight to wingers and stops crosses getting in regularly then he'll shut his doubters up.

Touch tight?
Genuinely not being condescending but at any level of football if a defender isn't blessed with pace, which Baines isn't, you are told to retreat and reduce the space behind you. You can't be getting tight to pacey wingers high up the pitch. It's suicide.
What he needed to do more though, and he is now, is press high when the winger is facing his own goal and force him to go backwards.
Barry is now doing that too. Again because he doesn't want players turning and running at him with space in behind.
I take your point on crosses though. When there isn't space behind him, he needs to shut the space down and stop the cross.

Same difference mate. To do that you cant be anything other than right up a wingers arse and making sure he know's he cant turn.

It's that physical part of the game Baines has never really fancied. If he has no pace to cope an older player needs to be able to use other means

He did it with Anoutovic today at the end. Let's see how many more times he does it. A lot more is needed.

But to do that you've got to pick and choose your moments to dash. If he's permanently that high it would take a decent winger a few attempts to perfect rolling him and opening up 30 yards of free pitch.
Do think you've got a point on his need to continue in this vein. Top quality footballer though Dave. We need him.

He was a top quality wide player masquerading as a FB. I think those days are gone now and he's (remarkable given his age) needing to learn how to defend to keep in this team.

I hope that's the case anyway. I'd hate to think Koaman will hand a shirt to someone on past history...and the fact he'll start running to the Echo if he doesn't get one.

Why are you bothering ?

Not having a go, just genuinely confused as to why people try and have genuine discussions about football with Davek.

He clearly knows very little about football and only exists on here to wind people up.
