Really loathed to criticise Baines like jags have been great servants but at most a squad player now but with no alternative left back at the club which in it's self is a disgrace virtually has to play every game
I never thought I'd be agreeing with this, but him and Jagielka especially (along with Williams obviously) are an utter liability at the moment. Their heads drop as soon as things go wrong and their confidence seem to be as fragile as anything. The sooner January comes the better.
Him and Williams both desperately need time away from the first XI to get their confidence and form back. I don't think either are 'finished' or 'awful', but they could do with someone both challenging them for their places and taking the pressure off them, but we didn't sign any senior squad players for either position, not even just adequate ones to step in for them which would have been enough.

It would be really nice if just once or twice in a game, Baines had someone in front of him making a run so he could pass the ball to them.
Plainly he's not getting any younger, and can't bomb up and down all game like he used to, but a lot of the problems on our left hand side are down to the rest of the team not showing for the ball.

Really annoyed me that it took him until the 93rd minute today to make one of his driving runs and cross that he was so good at a few years ago. Showed he still can do it so why leave it so late in the game?

Past his best ? Yea, course he is, but he's not done.
I can't make my mind up if he's under instructions not to go too far forward or he's aware he can't get back quickly if he does, it's probably a bit of both. But, near the end of today's game he made a really good run forward which seemed to be fired up out of frustration at the lack of effort from his teammates to do much constructive going forward.
He'll need replacing soon, and ideally we'd have someone else available who can slot in so he's not playing twice a week, but it ain't his fault there's no quality back up or replacement in the squad.

Sadly, there's only so much money available to buy players with mate.
Obviously we could talk about money being spent in other areas when perhaps a left sided defender who could, as a minimum, push Baines for his place was more of a priority, but the money pit isn't bottomless and, to be fair, it was identified as a position we needed another body in.
It does get on my man mammaries a bit when fans get on players backs for a situation which isn't of their making though.
