2017/18 Leighton Baines

...but each were better than Baines in that period...which is why he was struggling to keep his place.

We should have got Robertson last summer.

Nah - Oviedo may have been marginally better but, again, injury prone.

Robertson is indeed the perfect example of a player we should have got - young, potential but quality, Baines dropping to squad player. But we haven't - there's been no player who has come in at left back that was brought in with an eye on being in the first team and replacing Baines. So now we have a finished Baines with nobody credible who can replace him, and what's worse is that the issue won't be resolved in January because the more pressing concern will be to solve the negligence of not replacing Lukaku.

Koeman knows/knew best.

Sad to say, time is up. Just realized today I was grinding my teeth just about every time he touched the ball. No shame in having the game pass you by, and like every professional when given a game will do his best. But it is up to the Manager to be the cold voice of realism and find the best use for the soon to be retired, either on the bench, or mentor to the juniors.... hopefully everyone has something more to offer than continually playing first team and hoping for a miracle.

Ha indeed...

Back from June:

Probably but we can't sign quality if Baines is number one - nobody decent will come in as second fiddle.

Very obvious problem. Everton over last two years have been paralysed by fear of change and have become an old boys club. Moshiri not investing has meant treading water is a very attractive option, and we're seeing the fruits of that policy pay off now.

That first summer window under Moshiri, the lack of a statement signing and selling to buy, really was disastrous and it can't be overstated how harmful it was. No plan from anyone - just a desire to rope together what we have and somehow tread water with it.

But he's got boss hair......and he likes Bob Dylan.....and he can strum a tune on the old gee tar....and he's a Blue....and errrr, errr.
He was finished as a top flight pro the day he shat his knickers on England duty and pleaded home sickness. Never recovered and went rapidly downhill after.
Another case of sentimentally ruling our Club.

Don't think he's been helped at all by our style of play, but he's done now. Needs to be on the wind down with his career. Been brilliant for us over the years.

Robertson can't get a look in at the minute, I genuinely would test the water with a bid in January, £12m or so.

Finished at the level where we want to be now.
Can’t slag Baines off though, imo he’s an Everton legend and probably the best left back we have had, certainly in my time watching the blues.
Most assists in PL history for a defender.
But all good things come to an end.
Unfortunately we have too many players coming to the end of their time in our starting 11.

Great servant and I hope he get's a position somewhere at the club, but he's finished at this level. Age takes no prisoners.
