Times caught up with him, can't get forward anymore and when he does make it up field can't get back into position. Great player for the club but ultimately finished at the top level.

As soon as he stepped up for that free kick and all our defenders had moved up, I prayed that he would welly it. But no. It reaches the edge of their box and the counter-attack is on. His corner kicks are not fizzed in rather looped in.

Poor from Baines.

Me too mate. He never drives them in, he seems to stand them up which makes it easier to defend.

Sad to say but his legs are gone and he doesn’t seem that arsed.

I'd say two, was fading three years ago but not quite done.

Definitely been done since Martinez's second season.

He's finished. Just doesn't have the legs to get up and down the pitch like a fullback needs to. Baines, Williams and Jags all need replacing.

We had two better defenders than Baines then in the shape of Oviedo and Galloway. Either would be of more use right now.

Galloway isn't a left back, and Oviedo was inconsistent and injury prone.

We haven't tried to replace Baines; we've been complacent and let him cruise on reputation for several years, and that's been the issue across the entire defence. We haven't bought to improve; we've bought to back up.

...but each were better than Baines in that period...which is why he was struggling to keep his place.

We should have got Robertson last summer.
