People saying keep him for back up. I imagine his wages are probably one of the highest in the team (deservedly). We need to pay a good player to be firstchoice LB so I’d much rather pay a good wage to a quality player and have either a kid or a cheap backup player like Martina on the bench rather than skimp on the first team player just to keep Leighton hanging around.

Baines still has plenty to offer for another season, just not as our only left back.
We need a new first team player in that position with Baines playing fewer games.
Then in twelve months when our new left back has properly settled LB can move on and we replace him then.

Tbh I have no axe to grind with Martina. He is what he is, a limited utility full back who gives a lot of effort whenever he plays. Nothing wrong with keeping him round to cover as third choice in either full back position if injuries hit. Would like to see Coleman and new LB as first choice, Kenny and Robinson as second choice then Martina or another academy player as a utility cover.

If he’s (like Rooney) unhappy accepting a lesser role in the squad.

We need strong recruitment at left back as a matter if priority. If Baines accepts the reality of his age and a lesser role helping the new player transition in then I’m all for keeping him.
