2020/21 Lucas Digne

Going forward Digne should come in for Godfrey but would like us to keep tight at the back on atleast one of the fullback areas and for me Holgate should stay in long term.

I think a big part of our success has been the two fullbacks not bombing forward and being caught out on the counter.

Digne offers too much going forward to leave out but for me Coleman can be replaced when you consider his lack of end product.

....if one bombs forward the other should sit but that didn’t happen so much under Martinez in particular. We need attacking full-backs, the trick is getting the balance right elsewhere. It’s largely why Godfrey has to play CB.

Old school was the back 4 on a pendulum
One FB went forward the other 3 moved across with the opposite side FB the furthest man back

But you are telling someone in a winning back 4 that has only conceded one pen in 3 games that they are not good enough
You hold the jersey until you have a bad game
No one should be a guaranteed starter

No you’re not though, because Godfrey isn’t a left back and he knows he isn’t. And the last game Digne played we won anyway.

Stick Lucas in front of Godfrey and we'll never concede again.

In all seriousness though, I agree with you. We also might not see the best of Lucas again this season. He'll certainly need easing back in.

But when do you drop somebody playing well, for somebody who's not really gonna be fully up to speed for a couple of games at least?
I would imagine there's a reasonable chance that by the time Digne is ready to play, Godfrey might not be playing that well and the defence might have conceded more than one goal. If that's not the case then I'll be with you, if he's had a dozen or so good games at left back and the defensive unit looks watertight then keep him in. I wouldn't be prepared to leave out a player who has proven their quality many times over because their deputy had a couple of solid games though.

For sure. It's a very small sample size of form for Godfrey at the minute. To put it in context, he's had an outstanding week.

The lad appears to have a real hunger and steel about him though so I'm hoping (predicting) this is just the beginning of an outstanding career.
