I'm happy to acknowledge Digne hasn't played well a lot this season. He's been disappointing. The system hasn't helped and he's not played well in it.

He hasn't been poor for 12 months, he hasn't been poor for 18 months and he certainly hasn't been poor for two years. But that's now the sooper bloo/Tony Scott Rafael boys fan club narrative, despite loads of evidence to go against it.

And, I've got no issue with selling Digne, if that was the plan to get some money in for a sellable asset in the peak of his career, it's fine. But I don't think it was the plan until he challenged Benitez, then got dropped, and now wants to leave because he knows there is no way back with Benitez. There simply isn't.

Benitez would have dropped Ronaldo at Real Madrid if he could. He had to settle for James instead. He dropped Terry, for no reason, at Chelsea. Punted Alonso at Liverpool. He's like a bull in a China shop, and he can't help himself. But people are saying he's the man we need to take us forward and unite behind? Not going to happen.

Your interpretation on how long he's been poor for isnt that same as mine. But thats fine as its about opinions. Ive never actualy rated him as a defender. Ever. He's to slow and to easy to get past.
Start of ancelottis season last season was digne at his best. Assists and over the half way line.
But this is where Everton have a problem. I want Everton defenders to die defending. This season is embarrassing. Last season ancelotti had to sit the midfield in front of them even at Goodison against average sides to keep it tight.
Digne cant defended. Holgate cant defend. Godfrey cant defend. Keane cant defend.
I want them all eventualy out.

You want instant results then yes ? I remember a left back getting switched to centre half once to shore up our defence. Didn't work straight away but the fella went on to become one of the best we ever had and our most successful Captain ever. If you were there back then I'm wondering if you were handing out HK out leaflets ?

TBH Ratcliffe was a CB anyway and was not happy playing left back to the extent he asked Kendall for a transfer because he doesn't want to play out of position at LB

That's fair enough. I think he's underperfomed this season and wasn't amazing in the back half of last season by any means. I do think there's caveats. He came back from what was meant to be 3 months out within 6 weeks, but when he came out we were lining up regularly in 451 because of the injuries and trying to eek out 1-0 wins. He still worked hard and contributed.

First half of last season, as you say, was way different and the team was playing differently.

As for your defenders that want to die defending thing, that's fine, but it's all about set up. We got 59 points last season, 11 away wins. We didn't do that without putting bodies on the line and effort. But - as I've said all along with Benitez when people were jizzing over the idea players would run more - football in 2020-21-22 is not just about effort. The days of dying to defend or attack are gone. It's about quality set up, systems that work, filling space and exploiting width. Effort and desire come into it but all the effort and desire in the world doesn't sort you out if the set up isn't right.

For me the only defender worth keeping is Godfrey. It would be Mina too but he can't stay fit. I'm okay with selling Digne, I'm just not okay with how it's happening, because it cuts our ability to get a good price, too.

Funny how James and Digne were never an issue ( senior pro and vice captain) before Benitez turned up isn't it?

There was obviously an issue somewhere though because we have been a shambles through 5 different managers, I’d clean the lot of them out and start fresh seriously.

I mean Benitez has bombed him out completely, already signed a LB and has done nothing but spout off in the media for the last four weeks but fans just expect Digne to be like 'yeah sound, I'll stick around and stall my career to fight for 16th place under a dinosaur who most of the fans don't like'

I remember him saying that being the case. And yet the fact still remains. It was still a matter of sorting the defence out first.
Don't get me wrong , Benitez ain't no HK but you have to start with the basics.
Attacking flair should be left till later Stop conceding soft goals first. Then create the team that takes advantage of that. But it takes time.
 
I’ll be first to admit he hasn’t been at his best but I’m still genuinely gutted that it’s not only gone this far but that the COB have been brainwashed so much that they have turned nastily on a player that’s always gave 100% in a blue jersey even on bad form
