Lukaku - Love affair over ?

So Rom ending up at a second or third tier side is likely bollox, as he would slay in the right system. Whether that system exists I don't really know as I hardly watch football outside of Everton, but there must be at least a couple of CL sides who can absorb pressure, play on the counter, and won't be asking Rom to build play or anything like that in the final third.
His United wages are going to make it difficult for him to find another club, as those who could afford him are unlikely to see value in a player who can't do it against the best sides. If you're, say, PSG, is it really worth straining your FFP allowance just to turn 5-0s against Angers and Troyes into 6- or 7-0s?

If you genuinely believe that a player of such limited technical ability would be accepted at Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich, fair enough, but it seems incredibly far-fetched to me.

I think he will go back to Belgium in a few years. Club Brugge or Anderlecht awaiting. Since they play counter attack, he will be very successful there as well.

he will never be a world class footballer in my opinion.

Fixed.

Lethal finisher, bang average footballer. I cant see that ever changing either. The worrying thing for Utd fans is that his finishing is starting to cost them in big games now and even his previous supporters (half of the fanbase) are starting to lose patience. Pogba was furious with him tonight for not making runs and Keown sounded disgusted by his lack of movement.

Wont be long until they are trying to offload him, especially if a new manager comes in. Can you imagine someone like Zidane watching him trying to control a ball?

Rom scores goals that Callum Wilson, and the majority of other centre forwards, would be unable to. So it's true he's an atrocity of a football player in the technical sense, but this cannot be ignored. It's maybe not apparent right now with Utd, in fact I was just watching his goals from last season on youtube and the vast majority were bread and butter that Callum Wilson and Cenk Tosun could indeed have knocked in, but when he was with us you could clearly see that. Maybe that's because we had the ball less so he was playing more counterattacking football which is right in his wheelhouse.

Lets not get too carried away...

Well, there's no real point disagreeing with you, because when Lukaku next scores a goal, you'll see that as proof that he's a better 'footballer', whereas to me it'd be proof of absolutely nothing, which is exactly the point I made above.

So we're comparing apples and oranges. Tosun is a better overall footballer than Lukaku in the modern game (hell, so are a dozen others in the league right now, even Callum Wilson at Bournemouth) but there's absolutely no way you'll ever understand why I see it that way so, yeah, no point discussing it.

This has been a fantastic lesson (and indeed the last 12 months have been) in the importance of goalscoring versus all-round game when it comes to the lone striker. It's your failure to correctly value his goalscoring ability that led you to say that you'd rather have Tosun playing for us than Lukaku, which is a bit mental. It should be becoming clear now that it's not those who rate him that are wrong here.

I understand why you see it the way you do, you're just massively over-valuing some skills at the expense of ones that are infinitely more important.

So people are genuinely saying they wouldn’t have him back on a footballing basis?

It’s like they’ve slept through the last 15 months.

You have to see it from the other side too. Lukaku has had 3 different spells at trophy winning clubs, he didn't score for Chelsea at all and the utd fans are complaining about the exact same thing as what we could see while he was here. The truth is Lukaku is a mid-table Striker with a very good goal scoring record, a Troy Deeney + (or even - maybe) if you like.

If the team is set to play to his strengths, counter attacking clubs that come forward in numbers against you then he is great, possession football on the edge of the opposition box not so great. I'm sure most people would have him back for the here and now but he isn't going to be the missing piece that lifts us up to win cups etc. he may find it much more difficult to hog the limelight this time seeing we have a much better group of forwards and with our defence like it is do you want to see our attack forever breaking down? (again what utd fans are complaining about)

I'm sure with the pressure taken off of playing for a utd he would be better than what he has shown but he will still be a player that is bullied out of it by decent defenders.
