Lukaku. Yes or no

I didn't realise goals were the only measure of a player. Lukaku better than Zidane!!

This thread grinds my gears like no other so I try to stay out of it. Far too many crazy people that haven't/but should of witnessed what he is capable of. He is an ok striker on the balance of play because usually* he slots the real chances created.

*Against lesser sides and no pressure games.

However he botches build up play as he can't trap a bag of cement, his aerial ability is not in keeping for someone his size and when it really matters the pressure prevents him attaining the level where he can make a difference.

I saw him play against Wales twice and was grateful the chances fell to him as of course he fluffed his lines. He has a whole history of this. He makes a mid-table team better due to his goals but for a top team playing against top opposition he his like our version of Gylfi. Good goalscorer, average footballer and that's before you even touch on the destabilising effect he has when he starts opening his mouth.

If he ain't good enough for utd, why the hell is he good enough for us?

Another two Champions League goals for Lukaku again @HumbleWedbetters

His side still didn't win against a side 11th in the Bundesliga, because they lack balance.

And guess what? They didn't score until Lautaro Martinez came on off the bench. Says it all. Once that threat is on the pitch, sides drop off, Lukaku is afforded more space.

He'll always score goals; but he'll score once and the other side will score too because of the advantage he gives to them, unless they're cannon fodder.

I think good sides adapt to help facilitate their excellent goalscorers, much like us this season with DCL who was quite frankly rubbish until he was allowed to stay in the box , and now he's playing brilliantly at the moment.

Well done Conte on playing to his side's strengths (eventually).

There's a ceiling on what you can achieve doing that though, which was always my point.

He has 4 in 4 in Serie A so far this season, yet they're still 6th. Says it all. He could score 40 and be miles off the title due to how they set up with effectively 10 men every game.

I've been patiently awaiting an explanation on how the draw last night was his fault. How come he couldn't prevent Vidal from having two brain farts in a game they completely dominated? Should he have pressed harder so that M'Gladbach couldn't get the ball into the attacking third a single time? Or maybe he is expected to score more than twice in every match? What is it on this occasion? I know you can come through with something.

I didn't say it was; I said it was a consequence of how they have to set up to play with him in the team.

As @orly says above, they're set up as well as they can be, and this is as well as Lukaku can play, but they're what I'd call a glass cannon - very effective when allowed to play, very easy to sucker punch. Monchengladback proved that; two shots on target, two goals, because they get exposed as they have to pile players in and around the box to make it stick.

So setting up to play to Lukaku's strengths causes midfielders to forget not to lunge into players in the box and concede penalties.
