Let's hope so mate. It was sensational when we got Rom on loan, and despite the arguments of some on here, it would be even more sensational if we could buy the lad.
I've no idea if the rumour is true but thinking about it Negredo would be a lot "safer" option for Atletico to spend their limited resources on than Lukaku given that he is proven in the league and grew up in the area.

Not the same opportunites to a make a profit on him of course but if they combined buying him and gambled on a couple of young strikers - and their record in finding them has been good...

Yeah, the Spanish and Portuguese seem to have the monopoly on finding class players from South/Central America. They could easily go for the safe option in Negredo, and pick up even better and younger players for less.

It's an enigma to me. Do they get all these boss players from latin america because the culture is similar, or do they just scout better in that area of the world?

I'd say the culture, climate and language gives the Southern European teams a big advantage when trying to sign these guys as young lads.

Mind you, the Dutch have a good record scouting theses boys.

Romario, fat Ronaldo and The Rat spring to mind

Yep, Latin America produces some exceptional talent. I can see your point about climate, culture, language etc.

It's an aspect that intrigues me - did (for example) Aguero's time at Atletico really prepare him for life in the Premiership and ENGLAND, any more than it would have done at a younger age?

I think clubs in Spain and Portugal etc have an advantage over British clubs due to their countries more relaxed regulations regarding workers from non EU countries. I think to sign for a British club players have to have full caps for their country and played in a certain number of games over the last 2 years, I can't remember the exact details, but it makes it difficult to pick up the young emerging talents before their prices rocket.

You've hit a massive nail on the head there mate. It's mad, some fruit picker from Poland can just waltz into the country, and I've no problem with that, but a young south american footballer can be refused a work permit when a premiership club is offering them a £1 million 4 year contract. MADNESS!

thank god he is having a sh*te World Cup! If he had played well, there is no way we could afford him. At least now, I feel like we have a remote chance even if it's not likely.

I just found this article which explains it all, http://sport.stv.tv/football/clubs/rangers/193378-explained-uk-work-permit-rules-for-footballers/. Having read it it seems the rules don't apply to under 16's, it's unlikely that many u 16 players are going to move country without their family though and it's unlikely that the parents would get permits just because their kid plays footie.

I'd say so.

A younger bloke would find it more difficult adopting to an alien environment.

By the time Aquerro came to Manchester he was probably settled with a wife and maybe a child or two.

And of course he would be rolling in dough by that stage so that undoubtably helps the bedding in process.

At the level he was at then and remains now, he would be totally immune from the day to day realities he would have faced as a teenager arriving in a foreign country.

And the Manchester climate would have had a 16 year old Aquero running back to his arl tart :)

Haha, some excellent points. The last line made me lol.

Let's hope Roberto can bridge that gap, because the spanish and Portuguese have been making a killing on these these players for decades.

Whilst his poor performances in the WC may well just help in our pursuit of signing him, it has in no way helped me in my fantasy football league where him and hazzard's poor points scoring is costing me top spot and a possible £60 windfall!!

On a serious note I don't think his poor performances will make much difference in the end. I mean are Chelsea gonna pull out of the Costa deal because of his equally poor performance?

I have no doubt that the accomodation planned at Finch Farm will go some way to assuring young South American talent and their families hat they wil be well looked after

Personally I think it’s crackpot idea, players are on enough money to afford their own secure and gated apartments - the money should go into the transfer pot.
