I reckon Martinez has gotten some sort of concession from the Board, something along the lines of "I proved to you all, with loans, that we were competitive & we almost made CL with those players. Back me now & we'll make that last hurdle to real European competition!"

No, he didn't say we're as good or as competitive as we were in the 80's.

He said this is the closest we've been to truly competing SINCE then.

What seems to be overlooked here is that all PL teams are subject to wage growth restrictions something that may well have an impact.

Irrespective the best information I can find suggests that Lukaka is on £4.16 million (or £80k a week ) at Chelsea I cant see him moving for less that his current contract irrespective of where he ends up

Im almost positive i saw something in the neighborhood of £40k/week at Chelsea. Even Man City wouldnt be so daft as to give a promising player who hadnt done THAT much £80k/week.

Just typing "Lukaku salary" into Google returned 2.4 million euros. In other terms £36,000 per week.

Definitely nowhere near 80k.
