Garbutt isn't even close to being good enough to replacing Baines.
But then Garbutt is a novice with very little first team football played and Baines is a vastly experienced international.
If Garbutt does sign and then goes out on loan for a season or even two and plays first team football every week then he can in time replace Baines...if he proves to be good enough and that is no way certain at the moment.

Last season I would have played Garbutt ahead of Baines, yes. Baines was out of form and Garbutt was in the form of his life.

An out of form Baines is still better than majority of left backs in the country. There is no way Garbutt should be playing ahead of Baines.

Ive been critical of baines over the past year or two but even when hes not at his best hes better defensively and attacking than Garbutt

I like the lad, very talented and looks like he can be Baines' replacement in a few years. Our fans are seriously overrating the lad already though. Just because his hair is decent and hes whipped in a few decent crosses doesnt mean he's better than Baines or 'in the form of his life'. If that was 'the form of his life' then he wont make it here long term, like i said he was good, thats it.

Its not about Garbutt being better than Baines now, its about his potential and the level he could reach. Like Baines, he's excellent going forward and has great technical ability however he isnt as good defensively and thats only down to experience.

If he excels at Bournmouth and comes back to become our LB in the next year or two then we will have saved ££ on finding a replacement. Also Baines was valued at £25mill at one point, if Luke reaches similar level and the way the market is going, especially with the english premium, he could be worth £30mill. Thats a lot of money to a club like ours.

If he comes back from Bournmouth and hasnt improved or we dont see a future for him then someone will still pay £5-6mill for him.

It's only my opinion and when he was dropped for Baines last season a lot of people on here agreed. Obviously they've changed their mind now. You should play a player on form not reputation.

I love Baines and he is one of the best left backs in the league but he had a nightmare season (he wasn't the only one).

Agree. There was no reason Luke shouldn't have been given more game time last season. Apart for Roberto playing his favourites all season of course.

He never had a nightmare season, he wasn't as good as he has been but he was still solid and managed to get double figure assists which is fantastic for a full back.

Garbutt with out a doubt shoulda played more, I was one saying that multiple times through out the season, that doesn't mean he's a better player than Baines though. (There's nothing wrong for with that though)

If United had of signed Baines two seasons ago Luke would've been the perfect replacement, if Luke was two or three years younger that would be perfect as well. He's at the age where he needs to be playing every week and we can't offer him that because Baines is currently a superior player.

The only game Garbutt SHOULD have played and never was West Ham at home when Hibbert played at left-back instead. And maybe a few more of the Europa League games to keep Baines fresh for League games.

It wasn't so much that, it was that he was blatantly third choice.

Baines > Oviedo > Garbutt.
