He's not saying it's the same. He's saying Baines had to bide his time when he signed despite being much more proven than Garbutt is right now.

Yeah but Garbutt has had virtually no first team experience at the top level and he's 22, the same age Baines was when he was bought for £6m. How can you blame him for wanting first team football elsewhere to actually kickstart his career?

I can't and I'm not. I think the point Dave was trying to make was that Garbutt shouldn't expect to be guaranteed first team football here.

Personally, I've got no problem if he wants to go elsewhere for first team football.

It's criminal to let any decent English player leave on a free never mind an England under 21 international who has big potential. Look at sterling going for £50 million it would be a massive cock up to let him go for a couple of quid compensation leaving us with a 30 year old and a player who may not come back the same player after 2 bad injuries. Look at Falcao, Torres, Owen etc oviedo for all we know may come back a crock

How does he know Garbutt is expecting to walk into the team here? Maybe he knows he won't get anywhere near the side as long as Baines is here no matter how poorly Baines plays, therefore he wants to seek first team football elsewhere. I know you don't have a problem with it, and no rational fans do, most will wish him well. But certain people have already decided they don't like him for, let's just say "other reasons", therefore those people will take any opportunity to have a pop at him

Would be disappointed if the lid left and by the sounds of things, Swansea aside, there's been no concrete interest which would have interested him. Even there he won't get in the side necessarily. Best to sign for us, one injury to Baines and he could stake his claim.

If the rumours are true and he's signing a 5 year deal and being loaned out to Bournemouth, that's great business.

He get PL experience week-in, week-out for year which will improve him as a player and he comes back to a PL club at the end of it - works for both parties.

If it was up to me, he'd be playing week-, week-out in our side but it's not and Roberto knows best so I'm happy with that.

And you would drop baines

Think it's logical for all sides if this happens. Garbutt looked good last year, his time will come soon especially if Baines has a season like last year again.

In saying that Baines is still probably the best left back in premier league, his standards have been so high in previous seasons that an average season and the majority think he is finished or declining. His value to this team is massive.

Exactly. He still got 13 assists and 3 goals in all comps. And Oviedo isn't exactly a bad back up either. I really hope we can keep Garbutt. Him singing a new deal and then going on loan would be ideal. If not and he leaves for free, then I wish him all the best.
