Heard that Garbutt is leaving. We need to stick with oviedo however we will regret losing Garbutt

I heard we'd offered him a new deal but there's a bit of a stalemate on that situation atm. Maybe Martinez didn't involve him on the back of that, I don't know, but if he did, then for me that's wrong way to go about it. For me we should be involving him more and giving him more of a chance in the first team to encourage him to stay!

I read earlier someone saying we don't see him in training every day and he might not show up well and were only judging Garbutt on his few cameos, which lets be fair, he's done really well in and looked a player but if we're going by that notion, then Barry must look like Pirlo in training cos he gets played every week even though he's terrible......

It would be interesting if those on here who concluded that Oviedo was taken apart by Ide could let us know if they were actually at the game as opposed to watching on Sky with its usual adulation of all things Red or having only seen MOTD. There was certainly no sense amongst those at GP of Oviedo being taken apart. In fact 'Oviedo Baby' rang out on several occasions in the first half in recognition of how he was playing.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Oviedo is a better LB than Baines or even Garbutt. I just don't recognise the player's performance yesterday from some of the comments on here.

I agree with you. Ibe beat Oviedo just the once in the second half to get a cross in (well he didn't go past him but gained a yard of space on him to get the cross in). When Ibe hit the post Oviedo was backing off (maybe a bit much) but was not a beaten man. Baines would have also backed off. Oviedo also put in a few good tackles on him. He did nothing wrong.

If Ibe had played for Everton and played as he did yesterday would he have been given MOM.
Quite honestly I don't think he would have been even considered.
Fortunately even though SKY control an awful lot in football they don't as yet the outcome of a game.
Yesterday it was two ex Liverpool pundits covering the game so it was never going to be balanced in their coverage.
To be fair Carragher is not the worst but Redknapp is embarrassing.

Spot on

I really hope Martinez left him out to protect him, he's still young and if he made a mistake to give away the derby people might turn on him.

If Baines is still out, I expect to see Garbutt either starting or on the bench next time we play.

The crappy thing about the Garbutt situation is that after his impressive pre-season and slowly being brought into the side with the Capital One Cup (where he would have played more) and Europa League if he had of signed his contract he would be playing now however I don't think either Martinez or Garbutt trust each other at this stage but earlier in the season Martinez definitely saw him as the future. I think he gave him the game at Newcastle for that reason.

Martinez doesn't throw young players into the team quickly. Look at Deulofeu or even Besic this year. He expects them to force their way in.

Barkley and Lukaku are different since they don't have a great deal of competition but Garbutt, Deulofeu and Besic just happened to be unlucky that they play in positions where three of our best players do.

The Sunderland links did start up again though, about a year after we signed him, cos he wasn't getting a game. See here:

If I remember rightly, it all really changed for Baines when Yobo got injured v Chelsea in a night game v Chelsea before Christmas. Lescott shuffled across into the middle and Baines made left back his own.

Wasn't aware of the Sunderland talks coming up again....I was just going off memory .. I don't remember the game but I do remember baines getting his chance when yoni was injured and kescott being moved across

.
If you watch again ( shot that hits the post ), Ov thinks Barry's gonna block off Ibe, but Barry lets him stroll past which leaves Oviedo slighty out of position. Barry's fault ! I agree Oviedo had a good game & I think he defends better than Bainsy, who's not the same player this season without Pienaar. IMO

It was Oviedo' turning his back which was a bad mistake. He played well though.
