.....is it right that we get a fee if/when Garbutt leaves? I appreciate this is the case for youngsters brought through the ranks but we bought Garbutt (£1m?) from Leeds. Suspect there is a sell on % if we do get any monies.
I don't think we will get anything for Garbutt. But Garbutt is a weird one. He came to us from a tribunal already and signed a new contract in the summer of 2013 so who knows why it was only till the summer of 2015. My guess is he obviously likes to keep his options open and that's fine but if I was another manager I would see that as a risk. I probably wouldn't offer him anything less than a 5 year contract or high wages - certainly not considering the talent he has. There's a good chance you will just develop him for free for someone else.

......I suspect there will be a few mangers willing to accept that risk. Sure a move will include a hefty signing fee (plus £1m) and a large wage but they will have no transfer fee to pay. The player will get first team football and potential international recognition and a financially secure future.

Well we were due a fee for Gosling, up to 4-5 million pounds which we didn't get because we didn't put the contract in writing for him. So yes we would be eligible for a fee. I doubt it would be as high as 5 million, it may be a couple of million pounds though and may be enough to put a potential suitor off him. (I think Ince's fee was around 6-8 million for example).
I doubt Leeds would have a sell on fee, as much like ourselves they will be awarded a fee as compensation and it will not be negotiated.

In the end I really hope Martinez can get this lad to stay. I think it would be a big mistake losing young players like him, as it sends the wrong message. I'd almost be happy to move Baines forward to Left midfield to accommodate him. I really like he could be England's next left back.

I can only hope along with the fee they would have to pay us it might put a few off. As I said above we need to do our upmost to keep him, and probably assure him of a route into the first team set up.

...hope your right but I fear he goes for nothing when his contract expires. I also suspect he's leaving and I wouldn't blame him for that.

It doesn't look good at present. I think we should be making him a sizeable offer to stay really, somewhere around 20-30k a week.

If someone is going to pay him 60k a week there's not much he can do. I suspect though he wants assurances he'll be in the first team. We do need to give him that.

And yes we are entitled to a fee, but that fee would not be decided by us, but by a tribunal. Before the tribunal we would be in a position to negotiate a fee even if he was out of contract.

How many appearances has this boy made in order for so many to be so sure about his ability? 100? 50? 20? Surely no less than 10? Bloody hell, only 4??? Must be some player for so many to be convinced to the extent of some wanting to move England's LB forward to accommodate him.

I'm not saying he won't find a club but I guess it would depend how desperate they are, if they like a gamble and whether they have seen enough of him so far to justify the risk.

We can't do anything at this stage. He either signs it or he doesn't. The club should never have allowed him to sign such a short term contract at his age in the first place.

Exactly - I really rate him but its the kind of "wow he looks good" - He's a long way from a sure thing.

Well I suspect Garbutt is saying he is off. We don't know why that may be. He may have a huge silly offer from someone, willing to pay him 60k a week and put him in heir first team (Rodgers has that in his range). Or he may feel that by 21 he needs to see that he has a progression into a first team. If it's the first option there is little we can do. We will get a small fee for him at Tribunal.

However if he wants more game time then the club can re-assure him. Baines could be rotated a little more, and could play further up the pitch. At a push Garbutt could even play wide left in particular games.

It would be awful to lose him to a West Brom for 20k a week. It's one thing losing more experienced players for reasonable fees but we need to do our upmost to keep younger players.

Sometimes you can just see a player has significant potential. In those 4 appearances he has been part of a back 4 that kept a clean sheet away at the side that was on a winning run in the Bundesliga. he was remarkably calm. Compare his performance to say Seamus Coleman's in Benfica, or even how nervous a Rodwell, Stones or Barkley looked when they started.

He has all the attributes to be a very good left back. He is quick, attacks well, tall and good in the tackle as well as being very composed.

The moving Baines forward thing shouldn't be taken so literally. What I really mean is that we should try to ensure young players are given a pathway into the first 11. Too often under Moyes we waited too long in moving on older players to allow younger players a chance. I doubt Stones and Barkley would have been given an opportunity had he stayed.

I think Baines would suit a more attacking role. But you could just as easily keep Baines at left back and give Garbutt assurances he will have an opportunity at the left hand side of midfield, similar to what happened with Seamus Coleman. Just saying to someone "well we have Leighton Baines who is the best left back in the league so you're not playing until he retires" is not good management or forward planning though. Baines is a fantastic player, but a player who at 30 will slowly start to decline and need rest, and Garbutt could help in that.

Not the right mentality imo. Get out of our club.

I can't blame him for wanting games and you shouldn't either.. He needs them to develop and if he can't get them here, he'll certainly get them elsewhere. Look at Rodwell. He sat on the bench for seasons at City and didn't hit anywhere near his potential. Okay, he did have injuries, but he was still their 8th choice midfielder.

What wage should we be offering our third choice left back to stay ?
I have seen people mention him possibly being offered 60k per week elsewhere whereas a quarter of that is more likely.

For his career Garbutt should probably move. It is unfortunate(or fortunate) that we have such good players in that position ahead of him and really it would be difficult to guarantee him anything.
He had a solid league debut and will probably grow into being a good premiership defender but he should by now be playing every week.
