He moaned about first team chances. Well he's had them now. If he doesn't sign a new contract it's all been a smokescreen because he wants to leave anyway.

As said above by sagey: defensively he's still learning a lot. He also misplaced a few passes that'd have been punished against top class teams.

If a player who's so raw is dictating terms to a manager it's a pretty poor situation. Sign/dont sign. He's merely a prospect in any case.

I think you are right about last night. Oddly I thought that was his worst game for us. In the other games he has been very assured defensively whereas in others he looked very composed and strangely bigger and more physical.

There's no doubting his quality going forward though and the quality of delivery into the box players like Lukaku will thrive on.

I am inclined to agree with you on whether he signs or not. If he can play 1/2 dozen games between now and the end of the season that is a decent number. I hope by playing him Martinez has reassured him that there will be opportunities going forward for progression into the first team. He only needs to look at Stones and Barkley for that as well as Deulofeu before him that the manager will give younger players an opportunity, and do it in a manner that they improve steadily. In all honesty he would be silly to move on to a manager like a Pulis/Allardyce who would ditch him at the first sign of an experienced Carthorse becoming available.

As you say though it's up to him. We don't know whether he wants more money or more game time, and that can only be solved by offering more game time. I think under Martinez's guise the lad could go on to play for England. I don't think Shaw is any better than him. But he does need to meet Martinez half way and recognise it may be a couple of years before he is a regular first team player.

He reminds me of John Stones when he first came in. You could see Stones had real ability, outstanding attributes in areas. But he was a bit shakey when he first started and would get caught under high balls quite a lot. Stones has really improved defensively though over the last 12-18 months. This should show us two things. 1) Garbutt if he has his head screwed on should want to remain with Martinez to continue to improve. And 2) Martinez can develop and improve defenders.

Stones was lucky as he had Distin in front of him who has thrown his toys out of the pram. Baines won't do that, so Garbutt will need to wait a bit more. But as you have said, he needs to see this for himself.

As I have said above, his performance last night and his general level of performances remind me of when John Stones started. Contrary to how people see him now, he was a bit shakey when he first came in. He got caught under high balls and wasn’t always physical enough. You could see though that he had some outstanding attributes, particularly on the ball and when he went in for a tackle.

I see Garbutt as similar. At times he loses the ball a bit cheaply and can be a little positionally array, But he too has some fantastic attributes. He is very composed on the ball and delivers a fantastic cross. I want us to keep this lad, but it will boil down to whether someone is going to offer him “silly” money. If they don’t then I hope and think he will see opportunities in the first team.

The ideal would be for him to sign and us to loan him to a premier league team. He is good enough there’s no doubt. Failing that I still see him getting game time. You could either move Baines or Oviedo to left wing. Alternatively I would have no problems with Garbutt himself playing left wing in some games in a similar way to how Coleman did when he first started.

My suspicion is that Martinez see Oviedo as a bit of a utility man. Since arriving Martinez has been linked with left backs quite heavily (remember Robertson from Dundee). I think the arrival of Garbutt has meant that’s on the back burner. I think Martinez will see Baines as our first choice left back, with Garbutt as a back up option and Oviedo filling in in a variety of positions. In some games Oviedo or Garbutt may partner Baines. This should give Garbutt 10-15 games which isn’t a small amount by any means. Going forward I think Martinez sees Baines role as further forward. To play full back you do need a fantastic engine as one of the key attributes, particularly in Martinez’s system. Baines currently has that but that may slow down a bit. That's how I see it anyway.

other way round for me ,Garbutt looks all over the place defensively play him in front of baines
Playing a left back left midfield is so 1990's
That doesn't work anymore you need real quality in attacking positions to achieve anything these days

I personally don't think baines is the greatest defender
Go watch the Southampton game
He was shocking

.....don't forget the Bosman factor, he will pocket a massive signing fee (£1m+) if/when he goes. I suspect he's already done a deal with somebody but hope I'm wrong.

I thought at too, but I hope him playing last night alongside a contract being given has something to do with it. I think he would regret leaving for money at this stage. I think under Martinez he will be like the next Stones and he will command much higher wages, whereas if he goes to a West Brom he may well end up in the championship in 3-4 years.

Having said that we ill be due compensation. I can only hope that this might put (domestic) clubs off giving him a whopping sign on fee knowing they also have to pay a fee for a player with limited experience.
