I think he's a solid player now who could become something more than that. That's the way any contract talk has to be played with him.

He's made his point about wanting first team play and he's gained a few outings. Now he needs to repay that faith by signing a contract extension. I actually dont think he will sign again. It's been my suspicion that he's using the outings he gets in Europe to showcase himself for a summer move. That's the only thing that makes sense to me here. He's been told he's the future at that LB position so sign a deal.

Time for him to **** or get off the pot. Tbh, the only thing that interests me is that Everton get a decent fee for him if he moves from a tribunal.
Also look at Barkley. We all thought he was the next big thing and he was given 65K a week and a new 4 year deal and now he wouldn't even get into our starting 11 with Gibson and others keeping him out.

Liverpool are refusing to budge on Sterling's 70k a week and Sterling looks like far the better prospect at the moment.

Unfortunately I agree I think he has no intention of signing. Playing him every week won't change his mind because he knows once he does sign then there's nothing stopping Martinez from dropping him.

Why the shot at Gibson mate...he was IMMENSE again for us. We'd have lost the game vs Leicester had he not come on and he played great today. He clearly has something we've been missing....that cutting edge.
Wasn't meant to be a shot, like I said he was like Iniesta today and you're right he was very good against Leicester too, but that's not going to make me drastically increase my valuation of him. I think Gibson is a very good player and I'm glad to have him back, but I'm not going to say he's world class just because he put in 1 and a half excellent performances, and I think we should similarly temper expectations when it comes to Garbutt.

If you are going to pay and play Garbut, may as well go youth across the board
Robles
Coleman(23)-Stones(20)-Jags (need a capt.)-Luke(21)
McCarthy(24)-Besic(22)
Atsu(23. sign him)-Barkley(21)-Kev(27)
Big Rom

Not a bad side to be sure, but maybe not our best. Could move Gibson(27) in for Atsu and play the 4-3-3 again. Could set the team up for a nice run if we can just hold onto half of em.

Seamus is 26 mate, his number is 23.

Careful on over-estimating Sterling's quality. Like all rs they massively inflate the reputations of their players, almost like a fear factor and also to enhance the reputation of the cult, and get top dollar when they sell. They've always done it.

Sterling is one of those players with a short shelf life, like SWP, Lennon, Owen etc. Small, quick over a few yards etc. easy on the eye. He isn't anywhere near as good as they make out and I think part of the contract thing is they are trying to goad a big club to come in and pay top whack for him, while his stock is so high.

Barkley is an early developer who is trying to push on after having so much attention heaped on him by the media and opposition players.

If Garbutt does leave will the fee go to a tribunal? And since we paid a top price at the tribunal for him, I'd imagine we have a decent case for wanting a lot more than that.

Barkley is in a different class than Garbutt. Barkley is someone suffering, because he plays in a team where the manager doesn't change his core philosophy of starting with two defensive-minded CMs (he plays far better playing from one of these deeper position, imo). I understand Martinez persevering with that because those two are asked to do a lot of covering and Ross isn't exactly a conscientious workhorse who can do that side. But just imagine him in one of the top end sides in the PL with great defences and playing alongside, say, Fernandihno at City or Matic at Chelsea. He'd be colossal. Just left to get on with being creative he'd destroy a lot of teams. The wages for Barkley effectively secure him until one of those two come along and make a decision on Barkley and offer massive money. On that basis alone it makes sense to get a lucrative contract in front of him and signed.

Don't Chelsea generally play 2 defensively minded midfielders as well? Matic, Ramires, even Willian is more defensively minded than Barkley. Barkley is nowhere near as creative as Cesc/Hazard/Oscar so he would never be given free reign without defensive duties at Chelsea. If they felt De Bruyne was surplus to their requirements, Barkley wouldn't get a sniff.

And I haven't watched City that much this year, but don't they generally play 2 of Fernado, Fernandinho, and Milner? I know when fit they play Yaya in the box-to-box role, but even he's better at closing down than Barkley (because of his sheer athleticism).

Honestly, I don't think Barkley would get a look in either team, and I don't think it's because of mismanagement. His problems appear to mainly be mental and I'm hoping he'll snap out of it soon, but the only times he's shown himself to be effective in a deeper role is when he's been part of a 3 man midfield with 3 players in front of him (I recall him playing in a 2-man midfield with Barry, and with McCarthy, last season, and he didn't do particularly well in either role.)

I thought City and Chelsea both set up usually 4-2-3-1 with (when they have the choice) Fernandhino/Toure and Matic/Fabregas as the two in each set up?

Barkley: needs space in front of him to move into. He's played successfully as one of a two against Liverpool last season at Goodison when he was dropped back there, and against QPR more recently. Ran the games on both occasions.

If he goes out on loan for a year next season, when he comes back Barry will be 35 so RM might be looking to move Baines into his role, which would free up a space at LB for Garbutt. This is assuming Gibson doesn't miraculously stay fit and become a regular starter.

I'd play him left wing.

He won't replace Baines at left back but he can deliver a very decent cross, plus we have no-one else who can play there.
