I thought City and Chelsea both set up usually 4-2-3-1 with (when they have the choice) Fernandhino/Toure and Matic/Fabregas as the two in each set up?

Barkley: needs space in front of him to move into. He's played successfully as one of a two against Liverpool last season at Goodison when he was dropped back there, and against QPR more recently. Ran the games on both occasions.

Barry and McCarthy both played the full 90 minutes against Liverpool at Goodison last year. Think the only times Barkley was one of 2 centre midfielders last season were against City the first time (Barry was ineligible), and against Palace the second game (paired with Barry in central midfield first, then paired with McCarthy when he came one, and they sliced through us like butter all game). I'll give you the QPR game though, he was immense there.

I agree he plays well when he has space in front of him, but I think the best way to create that for him without exposing ourselves is to play him in a 3 man midfield in a 4-3-3. He should play alongside 2 of Barry, McCarthy, Besic, and Gibson, and behind 3 of Lukaku/Kone, Naismith, McGeady, Mirallas, and Lennon. That said, it looks like Martinez intends to use Gibson further up the pitch than Moyes did, he almost looked like a #10 against Leicester and Young Boys, so we may see less of the 4-3-3 and more of Barkley out wide (which I know GOT will just love).

No mate, in that derby Baines got injured in the first half. Barry was switched to LB second half, and Barkley partnered McCarthy in midfield and absolutely ran the show.

He would be an asset to the club, agree with all on here he needs to get signing and stop messing about.

If he wants out then he should make it clear to the manager so RM can start making plans to cover him going off.

Paul there is a bit of difference between expectation and actually happening. RM may expect but what we need to know is what Garbutt expects.

Toffeelover, there is a bit of a difference between me simply quoting what Martinez said in his presser earlier and me stating that I believe that what he said automatically means Garbutt is staying.

Paul not criticising you but RM, appreciate you are just quoting.

As for Garbutt staying can't be sure until he blows the dust off the contract that is lying on the table and sign the sodden thing.
