I think what's encouraging about Garbutt is, is that already at 21 he looks a good player. When did we sign Baines, when he was about 23 or something? And even then, he had a lot to do and had to wait his turn behind Valente & Lescott. Baines was just like Garbutt is now, good going forward but suspect defensively but over time he improved defensively and got even better going forward and Garbutt will be the same.

Garbutt is the double of Baines, he's not lightening quick but a strong runner and gets up and down the pitch all game. Going forward there both good, can link the play and they both have great delivery, and timing of delivery aswell. And there set pieces are good, well, Bainesy's usually are but haven't been great but Garbutt as great delivery from set pieces and it's important we get him tied down to a new deal as in a couple of years, Garbutt is going to be our LB!

agree with this, it's uncanny how similar their play styles and strengths are. He's like Baines' protégé.

.......for me his strength isn't linking play (like Baines), it's his delivery from open play or set pieces. Sure, this is also a strength of Baines, but Garbutt hits what I call a heavy ball - a bit like Hinchcliff. I really think that for that gift alone he will get a game in the Premier League.

If I was promised playing time for a team higher up in the league, I'd be taking it. He hasn't grown up supporting Everton and if we continue to okay Baines, regardless of form, it sends out the wrong message and I wouldn't blame him for moving on.

Then again I reckon quite a few wouldn't mind us losing Garbutt and Oviedo as it would mean no one could challenge Baines' position in the side.

Garbutt should be retained. Bainsey ain't getting any younger and this season setting aside injuries, he's hardly been in sparkling form. Maybe with the demise of Pienaar and uncertainty about the future of Mirallas, the time is right to push Baines into a left sided midfielder attacking role with Garbutt as the overlapping runner ?

You're dead right about his delivery. May be misremembering but I feel like even in his limited minutes this season I've quite a few nice link ups/give and gos too though. He has a good knack for spotting space to move or pass into.
