What? Alternatively, Garbutt also gave Everton his all and saw his contract out. He worked hard for years to become first team quality - no easy feat - and when he gets there he finds he's still down in the pecking order (justified or not is largely irrelevant). Everton say 'we'd like to keep you ideally, here's a contract', he says 'this is probably the most important decision I will have to make in my short career, let me have a think about it'.

He's not kicked up any sort of fuss in the press (there are precisely zero quotes from him about anything as far as I can tell), the relationship with the club seems to be on perfectly good terms, has only tweeted nice and humble things after being given games (this anti-Martinez tweet which still gets wheeled out was from a totally fake account)...etc etc.

You get a bit of a screw loose when you get an idea stuck in your head so I'm not really interested in engaging you in conversation on this, this post is more just for posterity for anyone else reading.

No, he hasn't given his all. He's been training to become a professional player - something he was given a detailed two year plan by the manager to achieve - and the objective is realized now as he's been in the first team. Now after those two years are up he's run down his contract intentionally (even though a contract improvement is there to sign) in order to go elsewhere.

You might rationalize that as maximizing his market potential (or whatever other terminology Thatcher's children use), but I see it for what it is: a massive kick in the bollocks from a Judas.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned thinking that this feller owes us some loyalty...or something.

Anyway, I'm not arsed about this lad signing now. He's shown enough lack of class to demonstrate he does not have the right stuff for Everton. I just hope he\'s off asap after July 1st and the club gets a few million to cover the losses on him and put toward a player who does want to play for Everton.

Agree with this - Garbutt has got uppity about the fact he's not getting to waltz straight into the first team at the first opportunity. Baines is getting on, has had a couple of injuries recently, and there's a very real chance that Garbutt could get himself a regular first team place if Baines were to suffer another injury. Or he might have to wait a year, get experience in cups matches etc. But I do believe a first team place at EFC would be the eventual result for Garbutt, if he were prepared to be a team player and not just think about himself in the immediate term.

Exactly. It's a red herring put out there from his agent and consumed by the gullible. He is getting game time and will get more.

WTF else does this feller want? He's getting treated just like any other member of this first team squad.

I half agree, but he's not doing what any other young player wouldn't. Has he actually come out and demanded first team football? If he has, I haven't seen it.

He's impressed when he's played for us, and if he signed a contract with us July 1st I'd be happy. If not, so be it. Doesn't mean he's a traitor.

I'm not disagreeing with anyone here... just want to ask, how does anyone know how he's been acting? i.e. he's uppity, he's not grateful, he's disloyal etc. etc.

None of use really know this. Every game I've seen him play, he's looked great. Didn't think any of his performances were phoned in or anything.

At the end of the day, we're more than happy when a player does what he is doing in order to join Everton but when it happens in reverse the player is a cartoon villain.

I mean, now people are saying that they don't want him to sign because of his attitude. Just look at the McCarthy stories... you'd think his attitude was atrocious if you believed any of the pap that's been written (but most of us know that it's complete BS).

Obviously, everyone's entitled to their opinion but christ the media does a good job of writing articles that they know will make people fume. Controversy sells papers and gets clicks.
