Maarten Stekelenburg

Depends on what we have to spend / what's considered a priority. To shoot £30mill + on someone like Hart may not be a bright idea when we have other pressing needs.
Look at how Schmeichael provided a base for Leicester.

That's what we need. A bread and butter and highly reliable GK who just churns out secure performances each week.

Is that Stekelenburg? I think we take a chance sticking with just him and Robles.

I really don't understand what some of the posters on here expect from a keeper.

think he buys us time at the worse, we're not going to be winning the league this season, for me it's a rebuilding season and hopefully a top 7 finish. Maybe it might take the pressure off rushing out and spending money on a keeper before this window closes, and perhaps have a real good look around at whether there are better options come January.
We have cash for fees (apparently). GK wages even for very good class wont be astronomical...in short this IS the one area where we can spend without it affecting too much wage budget elsewhere..

Get a new keeper and let them fight for the spot. He was great today and it will all be fine until he inevitably makes a game changing mistake or goes on a bad run, then the fans will get on his and Koeman's back because we never bought a top class keeper. It will become an albatross around Koeman's neck at some point if he doesn't sign a new gk.
Spot on mate.

Today's couple of saves change nothing.

can people stop saying he was a 'fulham reserve' he wasn't. He was hardly ever at fulham during the time he was there aside from maybe half a season. He spent more time with monaco and southampton than he did at fulham. He was dropped for about 3 games at fulham due to one of their many managers not liking him at the time.

It's a big if though. As said above in that last post of mine: do you take the chance he maintains that form or go all out to get top class?

Honestly I think we will give him the job till Jan and then reassess mate, think we will have other areas the big Dutch crumpet thinks are more in need atm.

Agree. Stek looked great today, but he is only a short term solution at most.
Hope we are persuing someone more long term.

My heart sinks when I hear about make do and mend until another window.

Same old same old that mate. When the effin hell are we going to stop having to do stuff like that? How long have we known we needed to buy top quality in between the sticks? At least two seasons ago we knew we needed to get a great keeper in. Do we have to end up by accepting loan signings? No disrespect to Stekelenburg, but I doubt any of us would have had his name in the frame for a new keeper.

If he hadn't made them saves a lot would've changed, david.

He did what he was bought to do. You're only as good as your last game, and he had a good game today. He seems competent and reliable enough, and he's got vast experience. The problem with a lot of keepers these days is they're made out to be something else when they're quite patently not. Hart & Begovic immediately spring to mind.

Fair shout Dave, but end of the day if koeman thinks he's good enough maybe he's worth giving the chance, don't underestimate the go coach we just got and maybe he will bring his best out, time will tell but a very promising start.

We spent big once before on Wright, and once before got a free in martyn...
