Maarten Stekelenburg

No disrespect to Stekelenburg, but I doubt any of us would have had his name in the frame for a new keeper.
Also, without wishing to detract from the fella's great performance today, he's had one good game.

One swallow doesn't make a summer and all that.

Did well though.

Agree. Stek looked great today, but he is only a short term solution at most.
Hope we are persuing someone more long term.
Why ?? If he can handle the pressure of the opening day with a sold out crowd, A new managers philospohy ..It doesnt get much more stressful than that. Give the lad a chance...even Forster, Butland make mistakes. I thought he looked dead composed today.

If he hadn't made them saves a lot would've changed, david.

He did what he was bought to do. You're only as good as your last game, and he had a good game today. He seems competent and reliable enough, and he's got vast experience. The problem with a lot of keepers these days is they're made out to be something else when they're quite patently not. Hart & Begovic immediately spring to mind.
It's a gamble. Why should we have to continue to gamble in a position as fundamental as GK?

Fair shout Dave, but end of the day if koeman thinks he's good enough maybe he's worth giving the chance, don't underestimate the go coach we just got and maybe he will bring his best out, time will tell but a very promising start.

We spent big once before on Wright, and once before got a free in martyn...
That's true. I wouldn't rely on lightening strike twice landing a keeper like Martin though. We have the cash, supposedly. Punt Robles if need be and get a first team keeper in.

Look at how Schmeichael provided a base for Leicester.

That's what we need. A bread and butter and highly reliable GK who just churns out secure performances each week.

Is that Stekelenburg? I think we take a chance sticking with just him and Robles.
The trouble is what keeper do we take? If you take someone from abroad there's always the chance that an adjustment period is needed, so all the German keepers and their Lidl prices doesn't mean they can hit the ground running. For me we would go for Fraser Forster but he will cost a lot but as I stated it will depend on what Koeman sees as his priorities.

Holgate helped him out on that second save, but if he, and Robles can save us millions particularly giving City all the John Stones money back for that Joe Hart he will do,me with Robles keeping him on his toes for his place their goal was unstoppable the Stech made two great saves to earn us a well deserved point IMO!

Exactly.

We as fans have learned to accept second best and mend and make do. Well I don't see why that has to be the case anymore. We have cash, let's spend it on a fundamentally important position.

On the other hand he could turn out to be a great signing. Too early to say but I get your point about wanting to sign players early on. I dislike leaving it so late in the window, I think that encourages 'panic buys' for want of a better phrase.

I'd take Forster too. But if they have to have time to bed in then so be it. At least they're in and we have them to develop and adapt with us.

We should be in the hunt for top keepers. Why aren't we?
