Makeshift fullback problem

Garner is plainly not a right back mate, he was absolutely terrible there yesterday.

Not sure why you think having a full back with a decent cross matters in a Dyche side either, since when are they ever far forward enough to get one in.

Simplest answer is you play Dixon (and actual right back) in the spot. OR you sod off fullbacks go to a 3-5-2 or variant thereof
I would be tempted to try 3 centre backs, given the appalling full back options. The problem is that Dyche is so negative they could quickly become a back 5, with the wingbacks not crossing the half way line, and Dyche would insist on playing Michael Keane as one of the 3.
With a new manager who might set us up to score from something other than a corner or a set piece, it would be a valid option.

So its clear for 2nd year running we've left the full back position grossly neglected. Myko seemed to get better last season but himself and aging Seamus have a terrible injury record. The latter should just retire from international duties as his body is hardly coping with 1 competition, never mind 2. The less said about Young the better. Patterson I'd be surprised gets to play half season even with his lack of gametime and brittle body. On top of that our recruitment team decided to ship Godfrey off (far better back up at either flanks).

That leaves any manager (even if Dyche is sacked) to find alternate options within the squad.

My take would be to sacrifice Garner from CM to RB and sacrifice Mcneil to LB. Give Dixon a few minutes in 2nd half or give him the odd start if he convinces. Both Garner and Mcneil did a decent job last season there too. Both can deliver decent crosses and have good fitness.
Garner might be the answer in a decent team, but he's got no basics, no history in the position he's played in midfield ffs but even in a good team he will get found out...he got found out in a poor team yesterday in 10 mins*

*Not helped by Dyches narrow back 4

play DIXON!!!! he's the best proper Fullback we have.

Agree. Garner is not the answer. Not for the first time in that role, he was ill suited and very poor yesterday

My hot take is this...

...it wouldn't have been so much of an issue if Patterson had simply been developed & treated properly from the start. We've made a rod for our own backs with this as far as I'm concerned.
When Patterson came in he was a bit raw but it was clear as day his preferred way of playing is to overlap and get balls in to the box. This means he will never be the type of player that SD wants so he was on a hiding to nothing as soon as Sean walked through the door.

Garner came on and was all over the place moving inside and leaving gaps, Dixon at least has the instincts of a fullback and surely would have at least give us a bit of pace .
Two younger more athletic forwards thinking full backs would transform us how we are left with the options we have is a disgrace

Overlapping getting balls into the box
What is this black magic 😀

Especially with the slap.

I cant remember how many times I said even before last season ended that the full back positions were THE priority at this club....almost always to be met with "It isn't. We need more wingers / CBs / CMFs".

The reason we've been undone is because we dont stop crosses coming in. Simple as that.

We have to play Dixon at RB until January as he's the only option there and hope that Mykolenko gets the majority of games in.

That Thelwell and Dyche left us like this is unforgivable.

….ridiculous position we’re in, it’s not as if it costs a bundle to bring in a decent full back.
Except, we haven’t got any kind of bundle to spend unless or until we sell… and that’s likely to be arguably our best centre half in Jarrad Branthwaite.

We don't stop the crosses and we don't get crosses in thelwell is more culpable than dyche he should have a longer vision and certainly not leave us in this position

We don’t have enough money to spend on players for Dyche to pick and choose the ones he deciders to use/develop etc. it’s his job to maximise the resources and make all of the players he has into players that can at least contribute if we need them,

if they aren’t going to be in the first 11. At the moment he just lets them rot and devalue by sitting them on the bench and have no game time, even in cup games sometimes. If he won’t use them then why not loan them?

Garner was out to lunch on the first two goals. He's not a RB and should not be played there. If you say play him at RWB, I can see that, but he can't play RB in a back four. McNeil was dreadful as a LWB last year. These guys aren't used to operating in these spaces and get exposed.

The answer is to play 3 CBs, not play a bunch of midfielders in places they can't.
