Why does he have to?

His job shouldn't (and won't anyway) rest on this game.

We can go there and win, he has said that. We're going there to win, he has said that.

He'll do all he can to get us there, but it's equally as down to the players.

If we don't get through, it's really not the end of the world.

Wrong.

Martinez has shown himself incapable/undeserving of managing this great club in my view. As another poster has already pointed out on this thread; in most other premiership clubs he would have been sacked by now. His only hope to redeem himself is to get us through tonight and then beat the RS at Wembley. If you doubt me just wait and see how Goodison is against the barcodes and the rest of the season if he fails.

The board probably won't have the balls to act immediately against him, but how long do you think they will hold out against a turned crowd or shrinking attendances for 90 minutes week in week out?

I really hope I'm wrong and he not only gets us through but wins it.
Like I said before: he has to.

We have a 2-1 lead.We are within sniffing distance of our first trophy in 21 years.A playing career is all about getting as many medals and trophies on the sideboard as you can. This team and manager have a wonderful window of opportunity both tonight and in the final when we hopefully get there to make their mark on the history of this football club.We were serial bottlers in the big games under David Moyes but now's our chance to buck that trend. This game could our Kevin Brock back pass moment.

Trust me mate I desperately want to see us win this thing. I'll be devastated if we go out tonight.

But, i'm not gonna be on here saying that we're going down and enough is enough and Martinez needs to go if we don't manage to get past City (one of the best sides in Europe) at their place in the second leg of a semi-final, which is what i'm confident a lot of this forum will do if that happens...

I agree with you.

to be honest mate if we went out tonight i think it would be more of a hit of realism will reach some fans when they look at the team. for all intents and purposes this cup run has been the one shining light this season, we are not winning games by xy+z but look, we are through again. When you remove the cup out of it, and look at the season and the lack of winning then it all starts to look a little grim.

same as a win tonight will put the rose tinted glasses on for another month before we do it all over again with the final. Except at that point we could well be in a hole league wise, or looking half decent. Either or.

Like I said before: he has to.

The reason for why Everton is viewed as a 'great' club by a lot of neutrals is because we don't sack our managers when they hit a rough patch.

It is not Martinez' only hope at all. I can guarantee you 100% that if we lose tonight, he will not lose his job. Just because you and some fans on twitter say it should be, does not mean that it will in anyway come close to happening.

Again, it's this attitude of everything being the be all and end all that has been built up by the sky-hyped transfer window mentality that every team must spend £60mil per window - and that he must get us to a final or woe is us the rest of the season is a complete write off - even though we're in January, closer to top six than the relegation zone and still in the FA Cup.

Also, do you really think this young squad that Martinez has assembled would react well to our manager being sacked half way through a season?

There comes a point where enough may be enough. We're far from that point at the moment, IMO.

And it'd be nice to see the Goodison crowd get behind the team like we know they can. I've been a few times this season, and while it works both ways, the constant moaning and dreadful atmosphere is in no way beneficial to our young side.

It also goes some way to explaining the dust in our trophy cabinet.

Well that's the balance isn't it. It's liek people saying 'well if you take away Rom's goals we'd be in the bottom 3'.

That's irrelevant - if you took away Messi's goals from Barca they wouldn't have been half as successful over the past decade...

Why take away the cup run, as it's been a key part of the season?

I agree, this time in a month we may be in a hole, or we may well be on a run. We never know, but i'm sick of this (and this isn't directed at you or anyone else but just a general statement) 'be all or end all' mentality that some Blues seem to have developed - and more-so recently. It doesn't suit us...

Am I suggesting we settle for mediocrity? No. I want to see us winning games and being high in the league and playing good football. We're playing some fantastic stuff at times, and a lot of the time it hasn't come off as a win due to naivety on behalf of both the players and manager (E.g. sticking with Howard).

But whatever happens, i'm sticking behind this team. We're on the verge of something IF we can get it right. Whether Martinez is the man to achieve that remains to be seen, but he's the one who's got us on the verge of that potential achievement, at least.

because, like it has been said many times, best example is wigan. they won the F.A cup, that was their distraction for the fans, but when it came back to the league they were awful and eventually went down. Same principle here, take away the cup run from this year, or the europa run last year and the season is essentially seen for what it is, poor. If we weren't in the semi final, if we went out months ago, would the perspective be completely different now? yes, therefore it is a nice distraction for the fans but ultimately the season on a whole ahs been terrible.

Going out the cup or even winning it won't change anything at the club (bar the honours list), keep doing bad in the league and you will see some big changes happening, none of them for the good. That is the joy difference here mate, continued poor league form = worse team and harder to then change that. Cup however is great if you win it, meaningless if you don't.

what happens when there is 40,000 every week saying sack him?

I see the point mate, but, we didn't go out did we? We're still there so it's all hypothetical...

There isn't though? It's a section of support... for the time being anyway. I think most calm, logical blues think that Martinez is going along the right lines, and that when we're on our game we are genuinely one of the best in the league.

Unfortunately, the results haven't matched the majority of our performances, and again, I don't believe that is helped a toxic atmosphere at Goodison which is as much down to the fans as it is our under-performing side.
