It's Weird! Directors of football at spurs and Chelsea probably don't do interviews but we are Everton. I expect every senior person to have dialogue with the fans. That's what makes us a bit different to other big clubs

I must say that when PSV were winning ttile after title I didn't think: "The DoF is boss at PSV. He's so successful....and oh aye, Cocu isn't doing a bad job either I suppose".

Look at City, was anyone saying when City romped to the title last season that it was all down Tixi Bergstein or Pep.

It’s the perfect example example, City were rudderless with Tixi until Pep joined.

Yes these lids can pull off signings but it takes a manager/coach to make and develop a team and bring success.

@davek is right. The focal point/public face of the most important component of a football club, the first team, is the manager. Or coach. Delete at will.

But that doesnt mean that other bodies in the organisation are not vital. Be they a DOF, the club secretary, and obvs, the owner(s).

The manager will take the stick or plaudits depending on the results, in the same way a DOF will take the stick or plaudits depending on the quality of players bought and sold.

Cant really see the issue myself. Perhaps the clue is in the name. We are a football CLUB.

Isn't it the case that the Head Coach is THE most important person in the organisation? I mean it's his playbook (aided by offensive/defensive co-ordinators) that actually win/lose games, right?

Pellegrini had left Pep an absolute mess though in fairness.

I think the important thing is that the DOF and manager enjoy and embrace working together and share the same long term goals. I’ve seen nothing so far to suggest that isn’t the case with Silva and Brands. Everyone Brands has brought in so far very much seems like a Silva player.

They won one pre Pep under Tixi 2013 with the core of 2011 team, check who Tixi signed that year.

It’s generally accepted that a City’s recruitment was massively poor before Pep with an aging squad and really poor signing generally.

No but the people who knew about PSV ie the fans and the boardroom knew who the most important person at the club
The managing director said it when Brands was leaving
That’s why they refused two or three attempts by Everton to get permission to talk to Brands
Ask the Dutch fans who was the most important man at the club and they will say Brands
