If the DoF system is done well and done right, its perfectly fine, the DoF buys the players, the manager coaches the players.
The players will fear the manager more than the DoF, cos if the DoF wants rid, they go somewhere else and earn more money, if the manager wants rid, you kiss pine for 6months and miss out on your app fees and win bonuses.

We've had player power since the Bosman ruling, and prior to that teams in Europe were using the DoF system and sacking managers far more regularly than we did over here
The day the manager was relegated to being just a coach changed football forever, and part me still isn't sure it was for the better
I know some absolutely love the idea of a DoF and like to white knight for it, but to me it's something that comes with it's own unique set of trapdoors
Part of me genuinely thinks that in the coming years the idea won't last and we'll go full circle back to managers having more autonomy again. The age of the manager will return I think, it might not be for a couple of decades yet, but I think we'll get there eventually
Maybe we will go back to the players smoking 50 a day and drinking a few pints at Ht as well Mikey?
The DoF is here to stay.
Football clubs are multi-billion pound businesses, the days of 1 man having the power is going and will go forever.
Its a different game, has it changed for the better? We simply will never know.

How long does your average manager in the prem get these days, 3 years maybe? If they’re crap they get sacked. If they’re good they get snapped up and if they do alright then the club doesn’t go anywhere. How is someone with a life span that is (usually) pretty short meant to make say a mid table team into a team that consistently qualifies to Europe and beyond?
You make a good DoF an inherent part of the club to promote some continuity and a vision and then hopefully you get a good manager who can get the players doing what they’re supposed to do and when they’re inevitably snapped up/too old you still have that solid state to work from.

Scouting teams are massive now. Sports Scientists, Data Analysts, etc. A true football person SHOULD be supervising all of this. There's no way a manager could even oversee a scouting department AND work on training, game tactics, watch film, etc.
