Director of football / Sporting director / General manager; pretty much all the same thing.

They agree a style of play the club want to move towards.

Recruit coaches and identify players who fit into that system.

If the owner knows what they are doing then they can pick a manager and let him do this AND coach the first team. But when that manager goes all the staff, knowledge, transfer targets tend to go with them.

Everton was Moyes. When he left things started to fall apart behind the scenes. A lot of very highly rated people left and weren't replaced. We shouldn't let ourselves get into that situation again.

We should never have gone for the DoF model

Yeah wo wants to do something litraly all the top teams in the world do. This myth that dof or technical director is only something tha works on the "continent" is something I've never really understood. All of the top 6 team in this league have one and all the other top teams in Europe.

The games moved on and we need to move on with it. This club has been stuck in the 80's as far as it's forward thinking goes. Up in till the 50's everyone thought having a manager was a bad idea ffs. People need to get out of this mind set where the manager can still do everything at the club.

A dof/technical director is now a industry standard for success.

Our problem isn't that we got a dof. It's that we appointed someone who wasn't a dof. If when we bought pickford we played him upfront all season and he was crap. You wouldn't be looking at it saying "well having a striker didn't work, let's not bother with one next season". You would get someone in who specialises in that position and get the best you can get.

They're the wealthier sides. That's why they're successful. It's got nothing to do with them having a DoF. They'd be successful with or without one

How many sides have shot up thanks expressly to a DoF system?

Just because something is seen as the accepted way of doing something doesn't make it right for everyone

We still need someone in the DOF role but the crux is to what extent they get involved in transfers.

I would argue that a club at our stage of evolution is not mature enough for a DOF to get involved to that degree. There would still be plenty for the person to do without that responsibility and in our case it would clarify matters greatly to make the manager answerable to the DOF rather than the confusing model of working with them as an apparent equal.

Yes, all clubs have a DOF or variant, but certainly for the elite clubs I don’t think there is any clear evidence to suggest that it’s anyone other than the manager calling the shots with transfers, as in the pursuit of targets. You can give the DOF a role in negotiations and contracts, but those are very different things. Walsh and Koeman seemed to have a system where they each agreed the other could sign a quota of their own personal targets and look where that got us.

I’d argue that as we head in to a period of such change, at least streamline the operation and let the manager have total control over transfers, and review it in a few years.

A DOF could still work on a structural overhaul of the club from top to bottom, sports science, and advise the CEO and board and look at things like succession planning for 1 or 2 managers down the line.

Getting them involved in playing Championship Manager with the first team squad only results in the mess we have already seen.

You know what.....this is turning into a Silva like saga.

And I suspect the end result will be the same.

Shot down again :(

Reading those comments one would be forgiven for thinking Brands is playing us, trying to smoke out some other club he has his eye on.
He’s not a manager or a player, don’t think he waiting for other clubs

Anyone else feel its a bit of a bad time to appoint a new DOF, obviously we want him for a reason and we will give him a crack. Remember when we appointed Walsh in the summer and it seemed to stilt our activity that summer, i am not just thinking of signings i am also thinking of selling players as we clearly need to rationalise and make space in the squad and i assume the wage bill.

Part of me hopes Walsh stays for that reason or the roles could dove tail in a system.
No I don’t, Walsh has never been a DOF and was learning on the job an so won’t have players in a book or spread sheet or anything like that
Brands however has been a DOF for years and will no doubt have spread sheets or however he does it, will have a lot of contacts and will be a lot faster at sorting out deals

a
But maybe those players weren't capable of the original style to begin with and the new manager gets them singing off a different hymn sheet?
Andy Carrol would have been perfect for Koeman. Big grock who could head in crosses from wingers. In what world would he have been great for a manager such as Emery or Fonseca?

Hope your right if it’s one or the other, I have my suspicions it won’t be the case if it comes to pass, if I’m honest.

Spreadsheets !! Haha

I don't think they are or were ever needed over here, and see no reason why we have to do it at Everton

We never should have gone down this road
Southampton went from the bottom to top league with the model, then the owner died and his daughter sacked there DOF, now look at them

It’s like this... you got a F1 car and you need a driver, do you pick Lewis Hamilton who been doing it for years or do you pick Mr Bean who never drove an F1 car
