Exactly .It will.
Instead of having 15 minutes to reset their defensive line whilst we’re arsing about playing one touch football between the two centre backs and midfielders, we’d have the ball up the field
A change in formation will also allow 2 of the three midfielders to find space in the pockets. The defenders then have a choice, close the player and leave a gap behind or back off the player and hope he doesn’t cause any issues
The play is laboured, slow and predictable. That’s a manager issue
We're trying to go from 8-10th to 6th in a season where everyone above us in that range is mediocre. And I would argue going from 6th to second is a miracle with as little as they have spent. Look at what City and Liverpool have spent in the same time frame.Pochettino is undoubtedly a good manager, but the Spurs example is one that gets used a lot, and it doesn't have any similarity to our situation. Pochettino took over a side that was firmly established in the top 6 already, they'd had 5 consecutive seasons in that group before he took over. He's effectively just pushed them a bit further on, by getting a 2nd and a couple of 3rds rather than the 4th and 5ths they had been getting. That sort of improvement is a lot easier than what we're trying to do I think.
I also think it's a bit simplistic to say we're signing young players. We've signed some young players, but i'm not sure we've really signed enough to say that it's our MO. We appear to have been happy to bring in loans and the odd older player, and the majority of signings are just at the bottom end of the bracket you mentioned rather than being notably 'young'. I think the transfer policy still seems a bit muddled to be honest, as if we can't quite work out whether we're buying for the present or the future.
Touching on this, it makes me wonder if he's been told just to cross it in or if he is limited in that regards? Thinking back to Baines, he skinned defenders and crossed it a bunch but he also walked it in to the box and set up players with genuine opportunities with the ball to their feet.Exactly .
Good players can look poor in the wrong formation.
I have seen somebody post about how few goals our strikers have scored but how many chances have been made for them to score ?
We all know that Digne is a very good player but we have become so slow and predictable that opposing teams have been able to largely negate his threat.
We look slow and unimaginative with central midfield being the biggest culprit.
We have so many players playing poorly, but is it the players or tactics/formation that is wrong ?
I didn’t say us now, is what spurs where like when poch took over. I was saying that they bought young-ish players and it took a while for them to gel.Pochettino is undoubtedly a good manager, but the Spurs example is one that gets used a lot, and it doesn't have any similarity to our situation. No I know you weren't saying that specifically, I just mean the different situation means things don't work quite the same. If you've already got a team that's good enough to challenge the top 4 it's easier to buy with a long term view and gradually introduce players to the team. As we're seeing now, when you're a midtable side it's not as easy, and people start to question your young players because you're losing a lot.I didn’t say us now, is what spurs where like when poch took over. And I suppose depends what you consider young.
Brands has bought 10 players (I think) two over 25, with one being a back up goalie. You can’t just buy 19/20 year olds. You have to have some experience, but there is a philosophy to buy younger players imo.
That's removing the context completely though. We're not just trying to finish 6th this season and that's it are we? At least I hope we're not. We're trying to break into that top 6 permanently, which is a totally different thing and far harder. We're trying to close a gap which has been widening for years, and do it while not really outspending teams who are already better than us.We're trying to go from 8-10th to 6th in a season where everyone above us in that range is mediocre. 6 games in and our recognised strike force has contributed 1 goal.
Criminal going into the season with calvert lewin and a gamble on a kid from juve.
Reap what you sow.
You've turned a qualitative debate into a quantitative one.
Can Silva beat poor teams and elite teams?
Of course he can, it's there in our results.
You were nowhere to be seen when we were beating Chelsea, United and Arsenal last season.
