2019/20 Marcel Brands

Look at the games he was playing in and the criticism on here about his selection and playing.

Look, I wasn't happy with him starting yesterday.

But actually, when Iwobi came on, I saw Silva's logic.

It would have been Bernard, but he was ill. Walcott was in for his pace and the fact that he would probably sit deeper.

Iwobi played fine. But was not really on the left. His moments all came when he played centrally. But I can't say Gylfi had a bad game either.

Again, the problem arose when it was 1-1 on 60 mins. We'd had a decent 10 minute spell and that's when it was on Silva to take the initiative. He didn't. He left it too late and, predictably, we conceded.

His signings so far:

1/ Indisputable signing success: Digne

2/ Good purchase: Richarlison, Gomes

3/ Decent for fee paid/on a free: Bernard, Delph

4/ Poor buys for cash paid: Mina, Iwobi, Gbamin, Kean (over £100M wasted on these alone).

Worryingly the last two categories are predominated by this summer's deals, so he cant even be said to be getting the hang of it.

The feller has a very basic and average play book on players and fees. It's very iffy (and very expensive when they fail to come off).

He's basically a super agent's hand maid, and that's why we dangle on the end of a piece of string in summer windows, waiting to see what falls in his lap in the £25M-£30M range that others dont want.

I'd like to be like the majority on here and be certain that the big problem is the manager. Unfortunately it goes deeper than that: the problem is the man who employs the managers and buys the players.

We are in a real fix here with Brands, and that's one of the reasons I knew the DoF role for this club was all wrong.

The fact that you’re calling Gbamin a poor buy when he’s injured and we haven’t even see him play shows that you're desperate for Brands signings to fail.

Seem to recall you said Gomes was a bad signing last season when he was injured too, but now you’re saying he’s a good signing, so maybe we should class Gbamin as unknown at this point

Also unfair to call Kean a poor signing when the manager isn’t playing him.

You’re not gonna change your mind on Brands though as you were criticising him and calling him jughead before the fella had even sat down at finch farm. The real questions need to be asked in the Silva thread.

The three glaring errors that have wrecked our start to the season:

  • Bought a boy to a do a man's job up front
  • Failed to replace Zouma with anyone
  • Sold (on the cheap) our best DM

It's had a massive effect and he should be making it right in January, but wont, because "The Boss" doesn't do January.
Same old garbage Dave which you know is rubbish.
I very rarely agree with @davek on anything, but the points raised above are plain to see. We needed an experienced striker, we haven't replaced Zouma, and we did sell our best defensive mid. You can't criticise him for that.

You can't hold Brands responsible for Silva trying to chuck long balls and crosses to Kean, though?

Btw, Kean actually looked fairly sharp yesterday playing from the right in an actual 4-3-3 shape. Because he had space to run.

Silva needs to change the system. While you know I agree that Brands messed up in key aspects of the window, he can't do anything about the playing style at the moment.
You say that you agree Brands messed up but you expect Silva to simply shift systems to make up for it. It doesn't work like that though does it?

Who are the middle 3 we play with, btw, to make the forwards play better?

The jury is on Brands for me. What clinched it for me was the sloping off without justifying THAT summer calamity of a window. Handing an easy interview with the resident EFC PR poodle that was accessible to only a minority of Evertonians spoke volumes.

I don’t care about the PR side of it, but I’ve said to you before that his failure to get another CB in was a horrible mistake to make for a guy in his position.

I expect him to rectify it in January, but is still a bad misstep which he needs to correct.

But you calling Gbamin and Kean poor signings when one is injured and the other isn’t starting is unfair. As I said, you called Gomes a poor signing last year when he was injured but now you think he’s a good signing, so maybe accept that the jury is out on those 2 players as they may both prove themselves.

I said it was poor that we signed players not ready to get on the pitch from the off.
