I think the squad is in a better place. I think some though do tend to treat it like everything he's had to do is clear up other people's mess. I don't think that's the case.

I also feel that in some situations, he might have done better to quicken up the process. For example, there's no real excuse for a right-back not to have been brought in in the last 2.5 years - an athletic, quick right-back who can be the succession to Coleman. I just feel like that was a glaring one, because it's been pretty clear for the last 3 years that Kenny wasn't gonna cut it, imo.

But I'm glad he's staying, because we need stability, but he has to prove his worth now, because the shackles in terms of leaking huge wages on deadwood are now, if not off, going to be a lot looser come the summer. Still have covid's impact to deal with, but same with every club.
As I said to Big Oil in another thread, we have 4 "right-backs" in the squad, if 1 leaves, we still have 3, we need to see some Outs!

Most areas improved on, bar of course GK and RB.

I think the recruitment has been just fine.

Mistakes have been made, Bernie isnt really a glaring error, hes scored goals, he cost nothing and we did get a team to spend cash money on him, we as fans consider Iwobi a waste of money, but we don't know if that's shared and its not even universal, ask @TheBigIguana whether he considers him a flop.

Delph we took a gamble on and it hasn't worked out.

But we traded Bolaise for Hamez.
Who spent money on Bernard?

Iwobi's been a flop, what I dispute is that it is because he's lazy or doesn't care or anything attitude related and honestly that it is entirely down to him being terrible, although he's not the greatest player ever obviously, when we've never really given him anything to help him succeed. I mean he comes in having played as a LW or #10 and we move him to the right after never really giving him a run in either of those positions and on top of that we've never been a team that does well with players who thrive in passing well linked together teams. James is similar and he's struggling here at times just as an illustration.

Like Kean I think Iwobi is to an extent a victim of circumstance as much as just not being good. The price is questionable on both though as you can't spend big on someone who is a questionable fit.

This is my issue. I don't see why Kenny couldn't have been sold. Why's it constant loans.

In this example, Kenny really isn't that bad. He's just not really cut out for how we want our full-backs to play, but that's been clear for a long while.

It's one example, but it's one that's costing us.

Brands wants 2 players for every position. Well, we've not actually got that at right-back right now. Godfrey and Holgate aren't going to be seen as right-backs, they can just do a job, so neither one of them needs to leave for us to go and get a right-back. The player that does is Kenny - I feel that the decision on him really should have been made over the course of the loan at Schalke. They've had long enough.

Anyway, overall happy he's staying, but if he'd left, I wouldn't have been arsed either. Kind of sums up where I am with him.

Big Saudi oil had the cheque in the post.

Iwobi is pants!

Kenny is on loan cos nobody wanted to spend money on him.

Much like Lookman there are still things I've seen that suggest to me he could be good if used differently. So until then, or he's 32 and still hasn't gotten that chance, I'm going to believe he could do it still.

I mean it has worked with Lookman, I told Nymz I wouldn't say it in the match thread and I didn't, but Ademola was better than any of our attackers last week and it wasn't even one of his better games. I love Everton, but it is totally fair to say we don't always get the most out of players.

Lookman has far from "made it" yet.

His talent was never an issue, lets see if his very suspect attitude gets him through the next few years and he finds himself performing somewhere decent.

I thought he was utter garbo against us.

This doesn't make what I said untrue.

And I'm not even saying he's made it, but the people swearing we got it right with him are imo being stubborn at this point because our attack is pretty hideous and could use both depth and variety. We signed Josh King FFS.

I just think Brands has made a fair few mistakes which have compounded the issues that the previous regime gave him.

So, as well as clearing up Walsh's mess, he's also had to clear up his own to an extent - £28m on Iwobi, £120k for Bernard etc.

Think we all see the scale of the job that he had on his hands, but don't buy that after 3 years we couldn't be better on along the line in terms of our recruitment.

Said all along, the main pro for keeping him on is continuity. While that's all well and good for stability etc, I also think it kind of paints his actual recruitment in a rather indifferent light overall.
He's stabilised us in midtable.

Michael Dunfiord would have done that for us for about £80k per annum...and he wouldn't have worn skinny leg kecks with his knees hanging out of them either.

I dunno, I still feel we made the right decision selling him, especially for a profit.

6 Managers have punted him from not just the first 11, but squads.

The fact that we're going back to the same arguments after having seen him play at a solid PL level is sort of exactly my point.

The Iwobi is garbo folks won't change just as the Lookman is garbo folks won't just as the Kean is garbo folks won't just as the Davies ones won't. Even people are saying DCL is bad still.

I'm guilty of it to an extent but I can also admit for example that there was a point where I was actively mad that we weren't using Kean and DCL was getting all the minutes, which was wrong.

Iwobi still has value, as does Bernard who was a free transfer. The other lot were literally un sellable.(Bolasie, Besic, Niasse, Schniderlin, Tosun, Walcott).

He also has made some great purchases, Digne, Richarlison, Godfrey Alan, Rodrigues, and made the decision to stick with DCL and Holgate and Davies.

We are also stopping giving youngsters crazy contracts.
An£ have been more ruthless in moving them on.

Branthwaite and Nkounkou look promising, as do Gordon, Simms.

The number of players is gradually reducing and in my view the squad is improving, but with some obvious areas to strengthen.
