2020/21 Marcel Brands

Improvement yes, but I would have hoped for more progression with the money he's spent.

Too many technical players and not enough grit would be my main criticism. He needs to move players on this summer and get whoever Carlo wants.
Godfrey and Allan have grit, so maybe he's noticed that and started adding more.

Well people certainly wont be giving him any credit if we finish above 8th, that's all I know.

All of the blame, none of the praise.

The only metric should be has the squad improved and anybody who answers no is lying.
The proof's in the pudding I suppose. The squad looks better on paper, I couldn't argue with that. But they aren't playing better football (James notwithstanding) and if (big if, granted) they don't improve on 8th then performance won't be better either. So on that basis what it looks like on paper kind of becomes irrelevant surely? He'll get plaudits from me for exceptional performance, not for decent performance. If he builds a squad that wins trophies and gets in the top 4 i'll praise him. If he builds a squad that performs marginally better than the squad his predecessor got sacked for, I don't really see that as worthy of much praise. I don't think that's too controversial.

A lot of blame going towards Brands on our recent performances. As far as I’m aware,he hasn’t actually played for the first team or picked the team.

I think people are more miffed at not having a RB and playing Holgate, which is fair game. As is having no backup forwards, except the cameo-man Josh King.

I back Brands to build us a squad though in fairness, I think overall he's done a good enough job at transforming the squad.

So us finishing 12th last season has no relation to us finishing ** this season?

Despite you using 8th has your starting and finishing point for success?

Interesting concept.

Anyway, I'm so done with defending Brands, people wont be moved on this subject, minds have been made up.

I don't think hes been a massive success, as I say, mistakes have been made, but for me the squad has been improved and that's his only job really.

Its not his job to finish higher than 8th, cos hes not a manager.
Well I'm using 8th place as that is where we were before he came in and giving him his 3 year contract period to judge him.

It is his job to build us a squad capable of improving on the 8th place finish we had before he came in.

Ancelotti isn't Marco Silva so if these players can't get 8th with him at the helm this season that should tell everybody what they need to know about how well Brands has improved the squad.

It doesn't end with the right side still not being addressed either.

We have problems in midfield still and are somehow still relying on somehow getting a tune out of Davies and Sigurdsson.

Has he made mistakes? Yes, yes he has :

Delph was a major gamble, that's backfired massively
Iwobi is just a jokes footballer, if we paid 5m for him we would have been mugged

And that's it for me, 2 glaring mistakes.

When you factor in all the good work hes done, it evens out :

Paid 18m for the best Left back in world football
Paid zero pounds for Hamez, the best player in world football
Gave DCL a platform to perform
Paid big money for Rico, who has shown his talent and more than paid for his fee
Paid a mere 20m for Godrey, Doucs and Allan
Invested in Kean, potential STONKS

So 2 glaring errors and 8 astute bargains

Not a bad return.
Mina is alright too.

For us to sup at the top table we have to earn the right by signing players comfortable with supping there. we may have spent huge amounts of money on staff since Mr. Moshiri bought the club, but we have no one of that calibre.

We were somewhat hamstrung with COVID in the summer, but still managed to bring in Allan and Doucoure who're probably our best two midfielders now. With Sigurdsson it's a case of who the hell is actually gonna buy him? With FFP - and we're currently the worst offenders there - we can't buy big unless we sell.

This Summer he gets Walcott and Besic off the wage bill and in all likelihood Tosun, Delph and Bernard will be joining them. That'll free up much more space for us to play around with.

If after this summer he STILL hadn't addressed the right side and added more quality to midfield, that's when i'd worry.

I also am miffed at having to play Holgate at RB but we as a club let Kenny and Walcott go on loan. Lots of people are moaning that we never signed a right sided player,I can only assume that the right player at the right price wasn’t available.
I agree that he is doing a good job so far,and I am sure that will continue.

Yeah as frustrating as it was to not have signed a right sided midfielder, i'd rather we hold off if it meant avoiding another Iwobi panic buy.

Being realistic, we need 3-4 players for the starting XI this summer along with an additional 1-2 to improve the squad.

Thats IF he is still under contract
