2020/21 Marcel Brands

We were Pickford, Allan, Doucoure and Calvert-Lewin away from having our full complement of first choice outfield players against Brighton. For all the arguments that we have 10 or 11 players out, it is only those 4 that walk straight back into the team and whilst we'd be much better off with them, they have all been part of the disaster football that we have been playing since the Merseyside Derby in mid-October. The other 6 or 7 players that are out, I don't really care about.

Yes our bench looks pathetic when it is stacked with kids but the likes of Bernard and King are barely used by Carlo even when they are on there so it really doesn't matter a great deal that they aren't.

The signing of King just looks more perplexing by the week. We were crying out for attacking reinforcements ever since we let Kean and Walcott go without adequate back up to replace them in the summer. King was available all window yet Brands waited until the deadline day to sign him, despite us relying far too much on DcL and Richy, who have been ran into the ground, we barely use King at all.

Big decision facing the powers that be at Everton if Brands should stay.

My worry is that he'll sign the new contract and you'll get people who will still stick up for him in 2 or 3 years time when we're still sitting around 10th.

The simple fact is he has responsibility for the squad that Carlo has. Signing the likes of Delph, King and Iwobi has left us in a very weak position.

I know some people will comment on the injuries but I don't remember seeing any other clubs that have 6-8 youth players on the bench each week?

I don’t remembered seeing any other clubs with more than 10 players out injured/unavailable either. Quite the coincidence wouldn’t you say.

It happens fairly regularly throughout the league. Lets see if you keep supporting Brands when we're 10th in 3 years time.

He's had a mountain of crap to shift to give us the bandwidth to sign players.

I wasn't convinced on Brands - couldn't shake the Dutch league aspect but I think we all need to remember the scale of the task he had. He's always said his focus is to clear the damage from Walsh/Koeman and that's dictated a lot.

For me, only Iwobi is the big, big question mark. That was a desperate, last minute, nonsensical signing and it's not a "in hindsight" shout to say so.

I still think this;

Going to take time isnt it?

The big priority for him was the clear out (Remember all these? Schneiderlin,Garbutt,Stekelenburg,Sandro Ramirez,Yannick Bolasie,Cenk Tosun,Theo Walcott,Oumar Niasse,Cuco Martina,Shani Tarashaj etc).

We then have the FFP capacity/bandwidth to spend and strengthen.

It wasn't that long ago we were taking this side, with Allardyce as manager, to Arsenal;

Pickford

Keane, Williams, Mangala

Kenny Schneiderlin Gueye Martina

Walcott Niasse Bolasie

The missed opportunities are a kick in the balls but I think at the start of the season - 99% of fans would have snapped your hands off for the table as it stands after 28 games - with a win at Anfield/still in the FA Cup.

10 players out at the same time is a regular occurrence? Think you’re gonna need to provide some evidence to support that.

A quick Google Leciester have 8 players out at the moment. West Ham have 7, Wolves have 6. They still all have options off the bench with 1 or 2 youth prospects.

We regularly seem to have 5 or 6 youth players on the bench most weeks and have done for large parts of the season?

Well a quick search tells me Leicester have 4 out injured so I’m not even reading the rest of the post.
