Would love to see if we could tempt Rangnick away from the Red Bull Franchise with the chance of working with Carlo in the Premier League.

Think someone with his expertise would be invaluable in the DOF role.

I'd understand all that mate, but as you say in your last point I just haven't seen enough emerging signs to convince me that he has a plan, or embarked on a way of doing things that will result in a change of fortunes.

I would have expected a few bargain buys from someone with his reputation, insofar as you can get them in football these days. When was the last time we got someone from under the radar at a European club who went on to be a success? I would have thought that that was the whole premise of Brands appointment. Things would only ever have still been work in progress, but we would be seeing signs of that on the pitch, with young players who are good technically and have other desired attributes like pace and physicality.

I understand the reason Ancelotti assumed primacy for transfer dealings last summer, due to the position we were in, but in part that was due to the car crash the season before. As I see it, I'd rather back Carlo's judgement than Brands, and if that's the case, then there isn't much point in continuing with him.

The 2nd summer for brands sort of killed him. He's been very unlucky with Gbamin, but Delph, Sidibe and Iwobi have been poor buys. We have also got very lucky with Kean, as he would have been another flop too, but has been rejuvinated at PSG so we will make a profit. So it's swings and roundabouts. There's no doubt that is the summer where it went wrong for him.

I do actually see a plan with Brands, the promotion of younger players, and some of the cheaper signings we have made. The issue for me is really two fold. The first is, is he strong enough to implement a vision over what Carlo wants? Secondly there has probabky been a lack of dynamism in moving to this plan.

It's funny, aside from the digs yesterday I thought Carragher spoke a lot of sense. That Everton have a tradition of bringing players through, that the City always has lots of good players, but they will be given more opportunities at Everton so may want to come here. I'm not sure we are trading on that enough yet.

The Small situation worries me too. If he thinks he can get game time at another Premier League team but not here, the question has to be why.

Has he actually achieved that much though apart from finishing 2nd and 3rd a few times in a one team league?

The challenge is completely different. After Bayern, RBL can have their choice of whatever domestic talent they want and can offer them CL football (or a realistic prospect of it before they made it in initially). They can afford to bed in young talent in league games knowing that unless it’s Bayern or Dortmund they’re not really going to be stretched that much.

We are the complete opposite. We need a perfect season just to finish 4th and we haven’t got the luxury of developing up talent (look how painful it was with DCL)

I know what you mean, but I disagree.

I've said for years, I think our fans would be (reasonably) patient if there was a clear plan and end game in place. If we invested in younger players and said look it's not going to be quick and easy but there's method to this and it's going to pay off then people would get behind it. You don't have to be finishing 15th for 3 years before you get the success either, you can definitely be finishing where we are now with younger players and then looking to push on. Our problem is we never seem to buy into it properly, we do everything half arsed, and fans get impatient because the strategy isn't clear. It's hard to imagine us being any worse off if we'd used Vlasic, Lookman, Robinson etc over the last couple of years but instead we panicked and ripped the whole thing up to start again as usual. As others have said, I thought Brands coming in was supposed to stop that, but it's as bad as ever, the recruitment policy has no discernible underlying strategy at all, we just seem to buy whoever we believe is available and decent, without thinking any more about it.

Replaced some deadwood with different - usually more expensive - deadwood
How difficult is it to get shut of players by practically giving most away? Then he goes out and spends hundreds of millions on mostly tat.

What would it say about us if we offered this man another contract?

Definitely agree with this. Total scattergun approach that see us exclusively shopping either on the scrapheap of major European clubs or the favourite players of whoever happens to be our manager at the time.

We've got a couple of good players through the door doing this but the end result has left us with a hopelessly imbalanced squad.

The main selling point about the DoF position is that it's supposed to add continuity to a club's structure in the era where you get zero continuity on the bench due to the high turnover of managers. I'd argue that we saw greater continuity when Moyes left and Martinez came in than we've ever seen at Everton since we started down the DoF route. And to oversimplify those two managers, one was a dour Scotsman who didn't know how to attack and the other was a flamboyant Spaniard who didn't know how to defend. Hardly looks like a recipe for continuity but we were a simpler club then and maybe the incoming manager found it easier to work that way. And the upheaval changing the manager in that scenario is nowhere near as drastic as it is when we change our DoF, which we may very well be doing yet again this summer.

Didn't he interview for the manager position after Moyes left? Imagine how different are fortunes could of been. I doubt he'd leave RB at this stage , has been a major cog in their success and probably gets all the free red bulls he desires.
